It’s Mothering Sunday. One month after Valentine’s Day. My first weekend in the capital city in 2021. It had a slow start. Lounging! And more lounging! A long awaited visit from the man who introduced me to the social circuit in the garden city
in 1992. A long drive northward to the foot of Zuma rock. A breathtaking view, nice eighteen-hole golf course. A resort of some kind.
I was checked into the room after medicals and a compulsory COVID test. One of NNPC’s safety protocol for large gatherings. The room is a
three star resort kind of room... basic, clean, small and cozy. A feel of the bed gave me an indication that it would be a long night.
Arsenal were playing Spurs at the Emirate. I needed a distraction to take my mind away from the match. I needed the feel good factor of
physical exhaustion to prepare me to face the unwelcoming bed too. So I chose to complete my ten thousand steps for the day as I walked round in the resort to behold the grandeur of Zuma in enveloped darkness.
It’s 11pm. I was showered and perfumed for bed. Plugged my
telephone charger into the bedside electricity socket and left the phone to rest on the bed. Something was wrong. The mattress would vibrate every five minutes followed by flashes that looks like a firefly was underneath the sheets. I needed to relax but the intermittent sound
would not let me. At some point, I hit the mattress to see if the sound would stop and noticed multiple flashes of the ‘firefly’. Something is definitely wrong. So I picked up my phone hoping it would serve as a distraction. That was when it hit me..a mild electrical shock that
sent waves down my spine. I rushed to the wall, turned off the socket and removed the charger from the mains. I was damn lucky.
The electrical socket in this room had a short circuit that turned my mobile phone into an electricity conductor which in turn transferred
electrical current unto the velvet sheets on the bed. I had without knowing laid on live electrical currents.
It’s exactly a year to the day Tony was buried. He died while taking a shower at a new hotel in Kaduna. The report was that electricity leaked onto the shower panel and
electrocuted him as he attempted to take a shower. He paid the price for the negligence of technicians and hoteliers. I need to share my experience so others can learn lessons and know to be careful when lodging at new hotels and new homes. Nigerian technicians
can be negligent so we should all assume that anything could go wrong when using newly installed appliances. We should all learn to take the precaution of keeping electronic devices away from beds as they could serve as conductors of electrical current. I learnt my
lesson. You can learn from my experience too.
Hon. Ade Adeogun
PS: Photo insert is not the actual hotel room. It is only used as a placeholder for the story, which is a true life experience.

WOJI
Woji is very safe with good road network and the light condition there is amazing. The landlords increase rent according to increment in light supply time. Some areas are cool but be mindful
of mini woji. Boys are not always smilling there.
