Looking for more freelance work? Send cold emails.

This is the cold email I spent 90 minutes on back in June to land a $25k contract:
Subject — "Quick question about content"

(pt 1)
"Hi [name],

I had a question for you: what are your goals for content marketing this year?

I saw on LinkedIn that {your company} is hiring. As you expand your team, are you looking at growing with content too?
(pt 2)

"If so, I'd love to discuss how I can pitch in. I've helped B2B brands like TrustRadius, MediaRadar and Lusha boost their email marketing and SEO performance with great content.

Interested?"
I sent that email to 60 marketing directors. It got me a 35% reply rate, more than a few booked meetings, and one of my favorite clients (who I'm still working with).

A few things:
1. Don't make it completely out of the blue. Either look for companies who are hiring for marketing positions or Directors who just started their new gig.
2. Don't go crazy on your credentials. Instead, mention a handful of companies you've worked with and link out to your LinkedIn, portfolio, website, etc.
3. Personalize and follow up. Like, c'mon. Take the time.

This is Sales 101, but in the freelancing world it'll certainly help you stand out.

Hot take:

Most freelancers should be using LinkedIn Sales Navigator to find new clients/partnerships instead.

It's 100% worth the $80/month.

Here's how:
#1: Find new guest post opportunities

- Search for editors, content marketers, and SEOs, saving to a list as you go.

- Follow them on Twitter, connect on LinkedIn, and make note of the kind of content they create.

- After some time, follow up with your pitch
#2: Send personalized cold emails to potential clients

- Create a targeted search on Sales Nav (“Head of Content” at “Computer Software” companies with “less than 50 employees” in “California”).

- Export their email addresses

- Make a personalized, compelling pitch
