About four years ago, I had an argument with the son of a friend. "There no racism against Asians!" he proclaimed. I was gobsmacked. This young man, this white young man 40 years my junior, was telling me, an Asian woman, Anti-Asian Racism doesn't exist. I'm sick of gaslighting.
I regret that @KimsConvenience didn't address Anti-Asian racism in its everyday manifestations on a more regular basis. We had a few stories - Janet's art teacher, Jung buying shoes - in early seasons. I wish we could have shown more real life stories of what it's like.
Generally, we, Asians, don't like to take up space talking about the discrimination, the putdowns, the exclusion we deal with on a daily basis, the strategies we've learned to get by. Others have it worse. But damn it, it's real. Today with the massacre in GA, it cannot be denied
Telling TRUTHFUL stories about ourselves, our families, our loves, our trials & tribulations is a profoundly effective way to dismantle racism. Making people laugh for the right reasons - because Asians recognize themselves in our stories - is the path forward.
My hope is that while Kim's is closing shop, a few Asian artists who were nurtured on our show will go on, fight the good fight: For compassion, empathy & equality in our multi-ethnic nation, continent, planet.
And get a few laughs in as well
