VW hit by chip shortages again

In the main plant in Wolfsburg From Monday to Friday inclusive, two assembly lines for the VW models Tiguan, Touran, and Tarraco are at a standstill

A quick solution is not in sight, a VW manager said
For months, the Group has been struggling with supply bottlenecks for electronic chips - and there seems to be no end in sight.

VW purchasing director Murat Aksel is alarmed speaks of "a different dimension in the way that there is no quick fix" to solve the supply bottleneck
VW Board Member Murat Aksel. "This crisis is deeper, broader, more sustainable."

I predict that VW will lose unit sales in 2021 with increased debt levels and lower profits

EV sales will grow but won't compensate for the losses in the ICE business and restructuring costs
Aksel

'There will be problems throughout the year and supplementary capacity on the part of chipmakers is probably not foreseeable until 2022. "It will remain tight," given the fierce competition for the little production capacity available.'

"We're in a house fight."

VW plans to sell 300k MEB vehicles in 2021

15,500 BEV have been delivered already and 23,500 ID.4 +X ID.3 orders are open

5% of target delivered in 17% of the year

23,5k vehicles open for the rest of 2021 is 8% of the 300k goal

VW delivered 19 out of 41 days of production
The VW core brand shrunk by 1 Million vehicles in 2020 or 2 Times the deliveries of Tesla
While Q1 is traditionally weak the ID.3/ ID.4 are brand new models & VW is already behind its own annual BEV goal

Order entry is weak & used car sales high which may have to do with the Software issues reported

With only 50% of production delivered inventory must be massive

Wolfgang Porsche main VW shareholder about the announcements from VW Management lately

"Don't take your mouth so full"

The Artemis project is according to internal sources delayed already by 6 months

Source "It's related to the current development maturity of the new software"
An internal VW source "Unrealistic targets have become a specialty of VW"

3 independent sources from VW confirm to BI that the 'Landjet' will arrive earliest 2025
Among other things, the VW source said the ramp-up curve within the new Car.Software.Org was too flat.

"However further development from 1.2 to 1.3 to 2.0 is not yet proceeding at the hoped-for pace"

That is consistent with today's remaining issues of the ID.3/4

Tesla is growing faster in unit sales than any other automaker in the world

Don't allow percent growth statistics to fool you Image
Don't allow percent market share statistics to fool you!

You can lose market share in selected markets in percent but still grow faster than anybody else in unit sales globally Image
Example

If you sell 500k vehicles & your strongest competitor 200k - the difference is 300k

If the market grows 100% with 0% market share growth you sold in the next year 1M & your competitor 400k - the difference is now 600k

Even if you lost -10% market share you grow faster

"I happen to own 1,915,000 shares personally. I have not sold a single share and I don't expect to for another 10 years (...)

I think we are going to make a triple in this company (Tesla) in the next 10 years."
Autonomous driving worth $500m- $1Trillion in 10 years

"That could be a $40bn revenue business (...) that alone is worth the present price of the stock in 10 years"

"In addition to that, you gonna get a business in Tesla that I think gonna be $600bn a year in revenues (...)
Ron Baron continued

(...) and making $200bn a year of gross profits you get for free. A battery business that could be doing just about that much in revenues and a little bid less in profits. You get that for free. An insurance business. You get that for free. (...)

German survey with 5k people

Which of these German automakers do you consider most likely to be competitive in the field of e-mobility?

The 49% bar is 'none of those"
The same question differentiated in political orientation
The same survey results split into age groups

Interestingly the 18-29 age group has higher hopes for German automakers to be competitive with Tesla
