The pandemic and two hurricanes have made an already dire situation unsustainable.
Drug cartels and gangs have tightened their grip on power and ramped up violence—often in conjunction with corrupt state security forces. theguardian.com/world/2021/mar…
The journey to safety is treacherous. Not only do you have to travel thousands of miles—often by foot—but face exploitation and threats to your lives along the way.
3,600 deaths have been documented since 2014—the majority on the U.S.-Mexico border.
When we tell them to go back to their homes or tell other countries to be tougher, let’s be clear what that means:
It means encouraging already brutal regimes to commit human rights abuses to stop migrants from leaving their countries or seeking a better life.
We as a nation have a choice to make.
We can double down on the cruelty of the Trump administration that falsely fans the flames of hate against immigrants.
Or we can show basic humanity and treat the root causes of migration in the region.
That means ending a cruel foreign policy that arms the very state actors who are fueling the migration crisis.
It means investing in civil society groups and multilateral entities that can bring stability to the region cepr.net/the-trump-admi…
It means protecting the safety of migrants who are forced to flee—and giving them a rigorous and fair path to citizenship
We also have a responsibility to talk honestly about the violence people face in these countries—and not fan the flames of racist Republican rhetoric portraying migrants as criminals.
This is a test of our values as a nation. We have a chance to restore hope for the little girls and boys who dream of a life of opportunity and stability in the United States of America. I should know. I was one.

As a young immigrant, I took out thousands of dollars in debt to go to for-profit college—thinking it was part of the American Dream.
Like millions of Americans, I was left deeply in debt with a worthless degree and shoddy education. #CancelStudentDebt
I was fortunate enough to eventually go to a public university and begin to pay it off, but millions do not have that luxury.
Here are some misconceptions about who has debt and why we need full cancellation.
Is this really a crisis?
Yes! Student debt has more than doubled in just 10 years. 45 million Americans now are saddled with over $1.7 trillion in debt—and the delinquency rates have nearly doubled. educationdata.org/student-loan-d…
As progressives, it is easy to become jaded about the possibility of meaningful change.
The fight for a more democratic America is far from over, but in just the first week, the Biden Administration has acted on many of progressives’ top asks. (Thread) nbcnews.com/politics/2020-…
Here are just a few of the policies the Administration put in place in the first week:
✅ An interagency fight to root out systemic racism
✅ Rescinding the ban on diversity and inclusion training
✅ A ban on federal contracts with private prisons cnbc.com/2021/01/26/bid…
On climate, the Biden team:
✅ Revoked the Keystone XL pipeline permit
✅ Put a moratorium on oil and natural gas leases

✅ Reinstated vehicle emissions standards cnn.com/2021/01/20/bus…
Pompeo lobbied for and imposed crippling sanctions on the Iranian people—depriving them of much-needed medical supplies during a pandemic and killing thousands.
The other result? Iran now has 12 times more enriched uranium than allowed and the Iranian regime is more powerful than ever. Great going, Mike! bbc.com/news/world-mid…
Our republic did not arrive overnight. It was cultivated over centuries.
It took dedicated organizers and movements to help craft the multiracial democracy we have today.
It took a women’s movement, a labor movement, a Civil Rights movement, and a literal civil war to quash a violent white supremacist insurrection and extend basic rights to the vast majority of the population. That work is far from over!
Our republic is like a living, breathing organism. It requires attention and growth to meet the needs of its population.
And just as it can be strengthened, it can be corrupted, weakened and destroyed.
