Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: We have administered 418K+ doses of vaccine. Starting Fri. at 8 am, AHS will open booking to all remaining 2A birth years, the booking tool will be offline from 7:30-8 am. Appts are also available at participating pharmacies. (1/7)
Over the last 24hrs, we ID’d 505 new cases & completed about 10.9K tests. Our positivity rate is 4.8%. We ID’d 91 new cases of variants of concern, about 12% of active cases. There are active alerts/outbreaks in 297 schools w/ 1,241 cases since Jan. 11. (2/7)
There are 264 people in hospital incl 43 in ICU. Sadly, 1 new death was reported in the last 24hrs. My condolences go to anyone who is mourning someone lost today. You are not alone. There is help to support you through this difficult time. (3/7)
No region is immune to COVID spread, throughout the pandemic we have seen cases rise & fall throughout AB. #YQL & surrounding areas have been hit hard recently w/cases rising from 19-469 in 3 wks. Cases are rising sharply & we must curb the current rate of infection. (4/7)
Many cases are linked to family gatherings, visits b/w households, ppl w/mild symptoms who don’t stay home/get tested right away & faith gatherings w/no masking/distancing. Most are doing their part but the actions of a few people can have far-reaching impact. (5/7)
Widespread transmission would mean surges in hospitalizations, ICU admissions & deaths. We are close to having the ability to prevent these consequences w/vaccine. It is essential that we do not participate in indoor social gatherings & we follow public health orders. (6/7)
Not attending parties/potlucks & staying home if sick are important. By making simple, safe choices every day, we can break the chains of transmission & reduce spread in #YQL & across AB. It’s tempting to think 1 person’s actions doesn’t make a diff. but each of us matters. (7/7)
CORRECTION: (4/7) of today’s thread should read #YQL & surrounding areas have been hit hard recently w/cases rising from 196-469 in 3 wks, instead of 19-469. We apologize for the error in today’s update.

I would like to provide an update on #COVID19AB vaccine safety.
After thorough reviews, Health Canada, the European Medicine Agency & others have all found that the AstraZeneca vaccine is not associated with an increased overall risk of all blood clots. (1/7)
Only 25/20,000,000 people who received AstraZeneca reported the issues that created these concerns. These involved specific types of rare blood clots: 7 reports of clots in multiple blood vessels & 18 of a blood clot in the brain, mainly occurring in patients under 50. (2/7)
The European Medicine Agency is looking closely at these patients to see what happened and whether the AstraZeneca vaccine might be linked. (3/7)

There are 276 people in hosp, incl 48 in ICU. There were no new deaths reported to us over the past 24hrs. It has been 5 days since a COVID-19 death was reported in continuing care. This is a positive sign that vaccines combined w/public health measures are working. (2/4)
Simple acts such as physical distancing from anyone not in your household & staying home when sick will help protect us, our families & our communities. I know we’ve all had enough of COVID-19 restrictions, but we must be vigilant a little longer. (3/4)

We have identified the first confirmed cases of the P.1 variant (the variant first identified in Brazil) in Alberta. These are both travel related and were detected thanks to the aggressive screening processes in place. #COVID19AB (1/5)
Our labs are screening every positive case for variants of concern to help identify them as quickly as possible. In addition, we also do full genetic sequencing on about 400 cases a week. (2/5)
These cases are already isolating. Anyone at risk is being contacted by our dedicated variant contact tracing team and will be offered testing twice. (3/5)
