The online Reddit community that recently went viral over GameStop and other 'meme' stocks is now investing in gorillas
During a six-day period in March, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund received thousands of symbolic gorilla 'adoptions' totaling more than $350,000 in donations from members of the Reddit group WallStreetBets. In comparison, the fund typically receives roughly 20 adoptions in a weekend
WallStreetBets gained national attention in January when amateur traders collectively bought GameStop's stock, pushing the prices up and causing losses for hedge funds.
Users on WallStreetBets often refer to themselves as 'apes' and are now using their profits to support apes in the wild.
The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund said the donations will go toward 'tracking, monitoring and studying wild gorillas and their habitat, and helping people who share their first home.'

The number of wildfires in the western United States—and the land they demolish—has drastically increased since the 1980s, according to the American Geophysical Union
New research from the group shows that not only are fires becoming more frequent in the U.S., but the area burned by high-severity fires, defined as those that kill more than 95% of trees, is also increasing.
According to the study, warmer temperatures and drier conditions account for the uptick in wildfires, which have increased 8-fold from 1985 to 2017. The area burned by high-severity wildfires increased by more than 450,000 acres during this 40-year window.
