I thought Kamala was black. Now she’s Asian?

Asia is a continent. In the US, “Asian” refers to people of East Asian descent, like Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Laotian, Thai, Vietnamese, Malay, Singaporean, Filipino. It does not refer to Central or South Asians like Afghans, Turkmen, Indians, Bangladeshis or Pakistanis.

You might be able to get away with describing her as an Asian in the UK, as the term refers mainly to South Asians there, but that too would be incorrect given that she’s the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants in America. She is American. She isn’t Asian-American.
