WE MAY HAVE DELAYED THE POLICE CRIME AND SENTENCING BILL BUT THE WORK AGAINST POLICE VIOLENCE DOESN’T STOP HERE!
This friday a policeman has been spared community service after assaulting a woman because it would be "difficult for him to work with criminals”. theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/m…
This judgement implies that police officers who commit crimes are not considered criminal. It implies that police are above the law
The victim, Emma Homer, said her children are now “wary” and “anxious” around police, “It’s unfathomable to them that a person whose job is to serve and protect would attack and hurt their family.”
Emma and her family are not alone. Poor, Black, brown, migrant and traveller communities have felt this distrust for generations. The police use their power to inflict harm on the most vulnerable without fear of repercussions.
The system protects the wealthy and the powerful, and it fails all of the rest of us. It will keep failing us unless we continue to oppose carceral police powers.
We don’t need more women cops
We don’t need plain-clothed cops
We don’t need more prisons
We don’t need to give the police more money and resources
We do need more affordable housing
We do need more provision for DV survivors
We do need accessible trans-inclusive healthcare
We do need public funds for migrants
To our new followers: our work isn’t done we’re going to keep fighting to #KillTheBill for good and to oppose state violence!
