1/ Goleman identified different styles of leadership:
Coercive
Authoritative
Affiliative
Democratic
Pacesetting
Coaching
Let’s think about these in turn:
2/ Coercive Leaders:
-expect immediate results and complete compliance
-have a high drive for personal achievement
-exhibit a high degree of self control
-value initiative within teams
-work well for organisations in short term crisis
…but can have a negative impact on organisational culture and can be difficult to communicate with
3/ Authoritative leaders:
-bring people together
-achieve well when a new vision is needed
-work well with people who need clear direction
-encourage individual and team achievement
-bring people together for a common goal or vision
4/ Affiliative leaders:
-are empathic
-are good communicators
-work well to bring a team together during difficult or traumatic events
-promote harmony
-form emotional bonds
-share problems
-express emotions openly
-find it hard to give negative messages
-keep morale high
5/ Democratic leaders:
-are interested forging consensus through collective action and individual participation
-may struggle to manage individual s who don’t buy into group think
-value collaboration
-are good communicators
6/ Coaching leaders:
-develop individual for the future
-succeed in stable teams
-develop strengths of individuals over a long period of time
-are self aware and highly empathic
7/ Pace setter leaders:
-are highly driven personally and demanding
-have high levels of initiative
-expect the same of others
-struggle with slow people
-can cause burnout in their teams
8/ Kirk Snyder, author of “The G Quotient” writes that
-adaptability
-intuition
-creativity
-communication
-and emotional intelligence
are all important qualities of an effective leader.
9/ Leaders who master the authoritative, democratic, affiliative and coaching styles, plus switch between them have the most highly performing teams.
10/ Successful leadership requires the individual to be adaptable, connect to different people, have a degree of intuition and creativity. Above all, good leaders require high levels of emotional intelligence.
