Thapar interviewed Shyam Saran (my fellow columnist at Business Standard). Saran was dismissive of Amnesty, but said Modi should be cautious with US/multilat bodies. Not sure he understands these bodies tell India what they do because of Amnesty and groups like it. For example…
The two Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights reports on Kashmir have 84 references to Amnesty reports. This is credibility. India can be dismissive but MEA doesn’t appear to know how the world works.

Babri finds no mention in JS/BJP manifesto from 1951-1984 though idols smuggled into mosque only months before Jana Sangh formed. Under Mookerjee JS won 3 seats, under Upadhyaya 14, BJP under Vajpayee 2.

More reliable high frequency data on our economy is automobile, two wheeler and commercial vehicle sales. We can compare sales of a month to same month year to measure growth.
This is trend we have.

The Indian is attracted to charisma whether it is acetic (Gandhi), comic (Laloo) or heroic (Modi).
The intellectual (Ambedkar, Manmohan) is not appealing for this reason. It is a shallow nation.
Our god men know this and that is why they appear in costume.
Gandhi’s asceticism was meaningless without its display. He knew it and therefore made much of it. Was bright man.
Gandhi may have been simple but he had to put it on display. Travel third class, go shirtless, spin his yarn.
Modi may well be the most courageous man on the planet but he feels compelled to claim it. Obama will not say he has a chest 56 inches around.

Golwalkar sensed that the RSS would get into trouble once the details of Gandhi’s assassination were out. He acted immediately. On the day of the killing, January 30, 1948, he sent telegrams to RSS branches suspending operations for 13 days.

The same day he also telegrammed Nehru, Patel and Devdas Gandhi with a message of condolence: “shocked at this cruel fatal attack and tragic loss of greatest personality."

Next day he again wrote to Nehru referring to Godse as “some thoughtless perverted soul” who had “committed the heinous act of putting a sudden and ghastly end to the life of Poojya Mahatmaji by the bullet.” He called the killing unpardonable and an act of treason.
