1. 3 major corporations — @Intel, @ATT, and @Cigna — pledged to stop supporting members of Congress who voted to overturn the election in January

Then they broke their pledge in Feb.

I reached out to all 3 for an explanation

Follow along if interested

@intel @ATT @Cigna 2. @Intel said it "will not contribute to members of Congress who voted against certification of the Electoral College"

Then Intel donated 15K to the NRCC, the main fundraising group for House Republicans. 2/3 of the House GOP voted against certification

popular.info/p/these-corpor…
@intel @ATT @Cigna 3. @Intel told popular.info: "Our policy halting direct contributions to members of Congress who voted against certification of the Electoral College results still applies"

Which tacitly acknowledges Intel is funding these members via the NRCC

popular.info/p/these-corpor…
@intel @ATT @Cigna 4. @ATT said it would "suspend contributions to members of Congress who voted to object to the certification"

Then @ATT donated 5K to the House Conservatives Fund, the leadership PAC of @RepMikeJohnson, one of the objectors

popular.info/p/these-corpor…
5. The House Conservatives Fund also supports members of the House Study Committee, a group of Republican House members.

The overwhelming majority of House Study Committee members objected to certifying the Electoral College results

popular.info/p/these-corpor…
6. @ATT told popular.info that it was assured none" of its money "will go toward the re-election of any of those members of Congress" who objected to the Electoral College results

Since money is fungible, this assurance has no practical effect

popular.info/p/these-corpor…
@ATT 7. @Cigna issued a statement saying it would "discontinue support" of any member of Congress that "hindered a peaceful transition of power."

Then @Cinga donated 15K to the NRSC, a committee run by @SenRickScott who voted to overturn the election results
8. The NRSC also supports the entire Republican Senate Caucus including objectors like @HawleyMO, @tedcruz, and @SenJohnKennedy, who is up for reelection in 2022

popular.info/p/these-corpor…
@HawleyMO @tedcruz @SenJohnKennedy 9. @Cigna also donated 15K to the NRCC. It told popular.info: "In January, our PAC discontinued support of any elected official that encouraged or supported violence on 1/6, and that remains true."

@Cinga's statement was broader than that

10. Most companies have not (yet) broken their pledges. These companies are testing the waters.

Surprise! We are still paying attention.

1. Florida Republicans say the state did an amazing job with the 2020 election and there was no fraud (Trump won!) but they are pushing significant new voting restrictions anyway and are having a hard time explaining why

2. "Some days even I don’t know why I did something"

This is an actual quote from the sponsor of Florida's main voter suppression bill who was pressed to explain why he was introducing the legislation if 2020 went smoothly

popular.info/p/corporate-ba…
3. DeSantis and key State Senators are pushing this voter suppression bill through the legislature. They are backed by prominent corporations.

@UnitedHealthGrp (180K)
@Publix (157K)
@AnheuserBusch (75K)
@ATT (45K)
@CVSHealth (32K)

And many others.

BREAKING

@Intel has broken its pledge to end contributions to members of Congress that voted against certifying the electoral college results

On 2/26, Intel donation 15K to the NRCC, the official campaign arm the GOP House Caucus

Two-thirds of GOP House members were objectors
@intel Here is the statement, @Intel release in January.

A month later Intel wrote a 15K check to the NRCC.

That money will be used to support dozens of members that voted against certifying the Electoral College
.@Intel's statement was one of the strongest issued as it appeared to be a permanent commitment

Still, it thinks it can get away with this

More FEC data coming in the next 24 hrs

BREAKING

@Cigna has broken it's pledge to suspend donations to members of Congress who impeded the peaceful transfer of power on 1/6

On 2/4, it donated 15K to the NRSC, which is run by @SenRickScott, who objected to the certification of the Electoral College
Here is the statement @Cigna issued 1/13.

22 DAYS later it was writing a 15K to a committee controlled by @SenRickScott

The money will benefit Scott, @SenJohnKennedy, @HawleyMO and the other objectors

(HT: @schwartzbCNBC)
I guess @Cigna thinks everyone has stopped paying attention?

No such luck.

More FEC data will be coming out in the next 24 hours.

1. I've obtained an incredible email that succinctly illustrates the dysfunctional relationship between corporations, members of Congress and the Beltway media.

I need to provide a little background first but it'll be worth it.

Follow along if interested.
2. After 1/6, dozens of major companies suspended donations to members who voted to overturn the election.

Initially the @USChamber was supportive. But this month it issued a memo arguing it was not "appropriate" to cut off funds based on the 1/6 vote

popular.info/p/the-empire-s…
3. Instead, the @USChamber said, we should only hold accountable "those who engaged and continue to engage in repeated actions that undermine the legitimacy of our elections"

Everyone gets one free chance to undermine democracy. It's only fair!

1. After Jan 6, dozens of corporations suspended donations to 147 Republicans who voted to overturn the election

Now there's an aggressive pressure campaign to get the money flowing again

It's worth understanding in detail

2. Yesterday, Bloomberg reported that Rep. Blane Luetkemeyer (@RepBlaine), a powerful member of the House Financial Services Committee, told donors that "if corporations were going to put him on an enemies list, he would create a list of his own"

popular.info/p/the-enemies-…
3. @RepBlaine's Chief of Staff, Chad Ramey, DID NOT DENY THIS ACCOUNT but said "he couldn’t discuss the specifics of any meeting"

Ramey said that Luetkemeyer never "referred to anyone as an enemy" -- which Bloomberg never reported

UPDATE: @HomeDepot is trying its best to HAVE IT BOTH WAYS on Georgia's voter suppression bills.

The Georgia Chamber said it was "in opposition" to voting restrictions and @HomeDepot told the WashPost (and me) it was "aligned" w/that

So far so good.
@HomeDepot But now @HomeDepot has contacted the Washington Post and said even though they oppose voting restrictions in Georgia THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY OPPOSE GEORGIA'S VOTER SUPPRESSION BILLS

Huh?
@HomeDepot .@CocaCola, after telling me its position on the bills hadn't changed, told the WashPost that it was also "aligned" with the Chamber.

I'm guessing Coke would also claim that that this does not mean that they are opposed to the bills, but it's hard to say
