Analyzing the number 1️⃣ in the world (THREAD)

The world number 1, Michael Coone, has had an amazing season and overtook the lead this week, but if we dig deeper into it, how has he played this season to get where he is?

His season in words:

Michael Coone started the season very well with a GW 1 rank of 43k, which is actually the lowest OR he has had this entire season. He kept up the green arrows and after an outstanding GW 6 he jumped from 18k to 2k and since then he hasn’t left top 3k once.

His next big jump came in GW 11 when he got from 2.3k to OR 618 which indicated in which direction his season was going. He then played his first WC in GW 15 setting him up for a 136 points Bench Boost in GW 19, taking him to OR 21st.

In GW 21 he got into the top 10 and since then he hasn’t dropped out of there. After a few small red arrows, he finally overtook the lead in GW 29, scoring 64 points. But what has made this journey possible?

Things I have seen looking at his season.
⁃Only taken 3 hits all season
⁃Successfully rotated McCarthy and Mendy between GW 5 and 24
⁃Bought Gundogan early
⁃Owned the same front three between GW 2 and GW 14
⁃Played his first WC in GW 15, second in GW 25

⁃Bench boosted 31 points in DGW 19
⁃Played FH GW 18
⁃TC Kane in DGW 26 (24 points)
⁃Played all his chips
⁃Not been ranked worse than 43k all season
⁃Played FPL since 2008, best previous finish is 75k. Finished 1.3 million last season

Conclusion:

The first thing I noticed was that Michael has had a template team this season, with few differentials. As we all know the template has been almost unbreakable this season and since Michael has owned most of the template players all season, —>

—> he has had a good rank protection combined with some differentials to fire him up the ranks. He has also only taken 3 hits this season which is incredible considering how tough it has been to plan this year, I have for example taken 10 hits and many others have taken more, —>

—> so the fact that he has been able to navigate this season with only 3 hits really impresses me. Another interesting thing is that he has used most of his transfers to rotate defenders this season, only owning 9 different strikers for example.

This has obviously worked out well and makes me wonder why it’s not that popular to transfer defenders rather than attackers.

It’s also interesting that he has played both of his wildcards to prepare for DGWs, a strategy that has worked out extremely well for him, scoring 136 points in DGW 19 and 107 points in DGW 26.

1. Get a good start is essential with some cheap gems eg Paddy Bamford

2. Maximise the double game-weeks/ blank game weeks - get as many players out as possible

3. No Friday nights on the town - means you don’t miss transfer deadlines
