I’m on scene at a Boulder King Soopera grocery store where a reported active shooter is inside. Police and SWAT vehicles are rolling in as we speak from all over, huge police presence.
*Soopers
James Bentz, 57, said he was inside the store when shooting happened. He said he was in the meat section when he heard what he thought was a misfire, then a cadence of pops. “I was then at the front of a stampede.” He said he ended up jumping off the back loading dock to get out
He said younger people in the store were taking care of older people in the store, helping them get off the back loading dock. “It seemed like all of us had imagined we’d be in situation like this at some point in our lives.”
Young folks stand on nearby roofs trying to see into the King Soopers parking lot. Drones fly above. The grocery store parking lot is a sea of blue and red flashing police lights
Table Mesa and Broadway is basically a parking lot for emergency vehicles.
I briefly spoke to a woman whose daughter was working inside the store. She’s trying to find out if she’s OK or what’s going on. She, understandably, didn’t want to give an interview and is now trying to find an officer who may be able to help her.
A group of officers just came running from the direction of the store. Not sure what’s going on but some appear to be leaving the scene headed somewhere else
Nick Edwards, 21 was in the store buying a snack — strawberries & some chocolate - with his mom. They were checking out when they heard shots. Nick and Sarah Moonshadow (mom) got down. “We Spider-Man crawled on the floor out of there” Edwards said he saw a body in the parking lot
By the time they got outside, Edward said police were flying into the parking lot & pulled up next to the body. “I knew we couldn’t do anything for the guy” in reference to the body he saw on the floor. “We had to go.”
Edwards said their car is now in the fenced off grocery store parking lot with their dog, Rollo, inside.
Steven McHugh said his son-in-law and his 2 granddaughters who are 13 & 14 were in the store as their dad got a COVID shot. He said they witnessed people get shot around them and managed to run to a staff area and hide in a coat closet until police rescued them.
McHugh said his granddaughters & SIL are safe now but witnessed people get shot. “They’re in 7th and 8th grade. This is completely fricking terrifying. This is unacceptable.”
There are several empty buses parked outside the scene. Not sure what they’ll be used for.
Surreal to see the beautiful contrast of the Flatirons with drifting fog and snow against this horrifying scene and day.
@Conrad_Swanson is livetweeting the news conference, but there is a lot of information police aren’t sharing at the moment. One suspect in custody and multiple dead, but not a lot of specifics police are sharing at this time
Families who are looking for their loved ones can call the Boulder Police main line at 303-441-3333
Goes without saying, but days like today are just the worst I can imagine as a reporter. Horrible, sad, sickening, maddening loss in our community that will have lasting, rippling impacts.

I’m so sorry, Colorado.
Police procession out of the King Soopers
I have never seen this many emergency vehicles in my life. They just keep rounding the corner.
I’m headed out for the evening. Please subscribe to the local news outlets you value. We’ll do our best to keep you informed.

Don’t sweat the SATs? Colorado colleges support push to deemphasize test results in admissions

dpo.st/3lx9AtL via @denverpost #EdColo #HigherEd

There are some stats I want to show you in this story that are significant.
@denverpost To determine how much impact socioeconomic background has on SAT scores, @coschoolofmines did a study sorting CO scores by local zip codes.

They found SAT scores may be more predictive of a student's socioeconomic background than their ability to thrive in college.
When the zip codes were sorted by the highest % of families living at or below poverty line, only 3 zip codes in the top 50 of that list had 1/2 of their students score an 1100 or higher out of a maximum 1600. Gaubatz said an SAT score of 1060 is considered “college eligible.”

I'm back at the scene of the Westminster shooting this morning. This is the Cedarwood Square Office Complex where police said the shooting happened.
The parking lot is quiet this morning. Where officers, evidence markers and police investigators swarmed yesterday now sits a baby bunny with a whimsical castle tower holding a sign for Children's Dentistry a few feet away.
Just saw a scene that brought me to tears. Brandy Navarette lives near the shooting. His 6-y/o granddaughter Lilly Diaz wanted to bring flowers for the little boy that died, she said. They brought flowers, a rosary & prayed in the parking lot. She asked me why he had to die.

You know when you get a press release to cover a Guinness world record attempt for tallest stack of waffles & expect it to be some big commercial thing & then it's just a guy's house? This is SO MUCH BETTER. Follow along, #Denver! Things might get weird!
There is an official DENVER LAND SURVEYOR here because the dudes needed someone to take an official measurement. THIS IS A SERIOUS OPERATION, YOU GUYS. THERE IS A 3D MEASURING DEVICE IN THE BACKYARD.
Land surveyor Dustin Hoaglin laughed when he heard about his services requested for a waffle record stack measurement but then he figured he had a bunch of fam in town for his son's graduation & decided it sounded GREAT to do this
