There was a shooting at a King Scoopers supermarket in Boulder, Colorado. Police are still on the scene buzzfeednews.com/article/salvad…
My good friend lives right across the street and said she started hearing shots rapid fire around 2:30/2:40 pm and “saw people running away, wailing crying”
Here outside King Scooper’s in Boulder, where a shooter opened fire at the supermarket about three hours ago.
Two Boulder police officers here told me that an officer died in the shooting. A PIO here would not confirm that just yet.
Officers have been looking into cars in the parking lot and on the street with flashlights
Neven and Quin Sloan came into the store two minutes away from their house to buy some vanilla waifers. Neven said he heard a “big bang” outside the front doors and that the shots were drawn out. He found Quin and ran out
Angel, 21, is waiting to see if one of her closest friends from high school who works at the Starbucks inside is ok. She heard there was a shooting and ran over. He’s been there for her through some traumatizing and difficult times, and she’s trying not to think the worst
Angel, Neven, and David Pendlebery have been huddled here for hours (it’s ~30 degrees right now). David shops here every day and was about to buy sushi when the shooting started. He ran into the bathroom and hid behind a toilet for about 20 mins, until it stopped, before escaping
An update: we charged Angel’s phone and heard from her friend. He’s ok and at the police station, but she said he told her he saw two of his friends get shot (this is unconfirmed by officials, who haven’t released much info). She is now going home to get warm
Boulder police confirm multiple people dead in King Scooper’s shooting, including one of their own officer’s
A person of interest is in custody
Officials are very early into their investigation and don’t have details about a motive or if there were multiple shooters.
Only person who sustained “significant injuries” was the suspect, officials said.
Police will not yet say how many people died in the shooting
For hours, police cars have been lined up outside the King Scoopers with their lights silently flashing, which I was told is to honor an officer killed in the line of duty
Horrible update: Boulder police chief says 10 people died in the King Scoopers shooting.
The officer who died was Eric Talley, one of the first on the scene and who was “heroic” in saving lives
Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said that the department started getting reports about a person with a patrol rifle around 2:30 pm. Officer Talley was the first officer to arrive on the scene, “and he was fatally shot.”
Officer Eric Talley was 51. He leaves behind 7 children, the youngest of whom is 7, his father told ABC News
“He was looking for a job to keep himself off of the front lines,” his dad said “He didn’t want to put his family through something like this...”
Boulder police chief, voice cracking, reads the names of the 10 victims of the king scoopers shooting. Their ages range from 20 years old to 65.
Steve Weber, a neighbor of the Boulder shooter, said FBI were here last night around 9:30 pm and police were yelling through a bullhorn outside the suspect’s home to come out
Steve Weber has lived here for 17 years and said the family moved in about 1.5 years ago. They seemed nice, but “weird,” b/c a lot of people live inside and there’s always a lot of “activity.” Several kids and a teen boy were usually outside, but the adults kept to themselves
Kirk Cerise said people in the quiet, standard suburb neighborhood keep to themselves. But he recognized the suspect when he was watching the shooting on YouTube, but didn’t really believe it. Then when he saw the burgundy Mercedes, the same car parked on his street, it sank in
Kirk Cerise also confirmed other neighbors’ accounts that a slew of FBI and other law enforcement vehicles flooded the street last night around 9:30, “lit the house up with spotlights,” and told people inside to come out immediately.
Posters and notes at the memorial outside the King Scoopers, asking when will these killings end and listing the names of the 10 victims
Someone left this note: “I was there that day. It could have been me. It could have been any of us. When will this nightmare end?” With their King Scooper’s receipt. They checked out at 2:17 pm, about 10 minutes before the shooting started
Damien is a manager at a King Scooper’s in Broomfield, 9 miles away. He was looking through the fence for a long time. He said he and other district managers all came here after work and brought flowers. He said his workers are struggling bc some have family members who work here
A King Scooper’s employee comforts a peer who broke down and sobbed in front of the names of the victims. He left his King Scooper’s hat and a sweatshirt.
Also, apologies** I am moving fast, very tired, and my phone keeps autocorrecting King Scoopers. It’s King Soopers. I need more coffee
“You didn’t deserve this ending.”
These notes by kids are especially hard.
What’s eerie is that many shoppers’ cars are still in the parking lot. Some have their windows broken, trunks open
Stephen Parlato, 66, is a retired youth mental health counselor. He made this sign a few years go. He says Columbine affected him greatly bc he saw how it “terrified” his young patients
Standing here, he says he is angry and sad
“There are a lot of guns in this state,”he said

Such a bizarre spectacle in Richmond today. It’s Lobby Day, and a small smattering of different orgs showed up for a 2A rally: Proud boys, Roanoke County Militia, Boogaloo’s, BLM 757, the New Black Panther Party (who said they were there for MLK Day), and other armed groups.
There were more media there than demonstrators and police were out in full force. Roads were blocked and snipers were posted atop the Capitol building. The Virginia Citizens Defense League, which organized, said that 20,000 ppl came last year. They couldn’t get a permit this time
Demonstrators here said that they don’t think anything is going to happen on Inauguration Day. Many of their friends will be staying home they said, because of what happened at the Capitol on Jan.6.
On 1/6, hours before Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, US Park Police monitoring rallygoers at the Washington Monument were already feeling overwhelmed
Officers arrested a man for breaching the barriers. In response, a woman yells "Antifa, let him go" buzzfeednews.com/article/briann…
In another TikTok video before he was taken away, a Trump supporter murmurs about the police “...rush them. There's more of us than them."
"You piece of shit," they yell. "You wouldn't do this to Antifa or BLM!"
Officers there said the hostility caused them to huddle up inside a visitor screening room. Trump fans carrying Stop the Steal signs then banged against the glass
Aided by USPP on horses, the group got their "butts out of there" before things got worse by sneaking out the back
US Park Police are experts at preparing for protests—they patrol over 600 a year—but they've been understaffed for years
They were also an integral part of the prep for the Trump rally-turned-riot, and officers say chronic issues hampered their response buzzfeednews.com/article/briann…
Some US Park Police were overwhelmed by Trump supporters even before the president started speaking.
Officers monitoring the Washington Monument said they retreated inside due to the crowd and then snuck out the back door with the help of colleagues on horseback
USPP work closely with Capitol Police. The two agencies, along with several others, were part of a joint chain of command for the Trump March
Officials said the coalition was in constant communication and shared intelligence, but treated the rally like a normal free speech event
A fast-moving wildfire is burning outside Castaic (northern edge of LA County). The #LakeFire has consumed over 10,000 acres, is 0% contained, and exhibiting "explosive fire behavior" due to a classic CA combo of parched canyons, low humidity, and dry fuel: @Angeles_NF
Nearly 500 homes are under evacuation orders—but many might not have a place to go. Red Cross, which normally sets up shelters, can't "because of COVID protocols," officials said
People are being told to sleep in their cars at nearby high schools and animal shelters. Unreal
.@RedCrossLA says that they've set up a temporary evacuation point but asking people to stay in their cars. If the #LakeFire continues to threaten homes, they will make sure evacuees have a place to stay overnight w/ covid safety protocols. More info: redcross.org/local/californ…
People have raised millions for the Black Lives Matter Foundation
Only thing is this nonprofit has *nothing* to do with the global movement. It's run by an LA music producer who says his org's mission is to unite the community and police buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanma…
Thanks to employee matching, major corporations like Apple, Google, and Microsoft raised over $4 million for the Black Lives Matter Foundation. GoFundMe didn't notice the discrepancy until we asked about it, at which point they froze $350K in donations slated to go to the org
The Black Lives Matter Foundation is located in a UPS store in Santa Clarita, CA
Its founder is Robert Ray Barnes, who says he has nothing to do with @Blklivesmatter and claims the movement actually stole the name from him: "They have lied and been able to profit using my name"
