There is a lot of good data out there about what's happening at the border right if people want to look for it.

What follows is a short thread linking to data from @pewresearch. (1/x).
"The U.S. Border Patrol apprehended nearly 100,000 migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border in February, the tenth consecutive month of increased apprehensions and a return to levels last seen in mid-2019."

Yes, 2019 levels, like when Trump was President (2/x).
pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021…
If border apprehensions remain at 100k a month this year for the whole year, 2021 would be an average year in the years of heavy migrant flows, the mid 1980s through 2007 or so.

This is not new, and we have far more border agents today (3/x).

pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016…
What is just undeniable, is that flows to the US border started coming down in the late Bush years, stayed very low under Obama, and only started climbing again to current levels under Trump.

This is a situation Biden clearly inherited (4/x).

pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019…
The total # of unaccompanied minors apprehended at the border in Feb was 10,000 kids. This is not a # that should be causing the kind of freakout we are experiencing right now.

Almost everyone else is being expelled (5/x).

pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021…
The biggest surprise in the data is the big increase in attempts by Mexicans to cross into America. This is something we have not seen in over a decade.

Does anyone have a sense of why this is?

(Mexicans are much easier to return than Central Americans btw) (6/x).
The point - migrant flows we're seeing now have been seen before in recent US history. Flows like this occurred every year for 2 decades. We saw a big uptick of kids in 2013-2014, and Trump saw a huge increase in 2019.

While hard, this can be managed.

If proto MAGA/right wing Republicans had not blocked the three big efforts to pass bi-partisan immigration reform in 2006, 2007 and 2013 the Biden Administration would have far more capacity to manage the challenges of Central American migration to the US.
The big messes Biden is dealing with - the economy, COVID, migrant flows from Central America, epic cyber hacks, Russian belligerence, enormous deficits, incoherent trade policy, etc - have all been made far far worse by years of GOP policy nihilism and recklessness.
Don’t think people realize there are no GOP alternatives to what Biden is trying to do - there is no GOP plan to defeat COVID, reboot the economy, manage the deficit, create a regional solution to the migrant flows, climate, infrastructure on and on.

They’ve just stopped trying.

Decades of GOP failure critical to understanding the moment. What have they really done in past 30 yrs?

Blocked sensible immigration reform, prevented action on climate, infrastructure? 3 recessions, huge deficits? Revived white supremacy, appeased Putin, attacked US democracy?
Dems offered a carbon tax in 1993, immigration reform in 2005, infrastructure forever ago, universal coverage been debated for decades.....abuse of the filibuster has contributed to GOP becoming nihilistic, not connected to governing. It's a recipe for American decline.
Behind this generation long GOP abandonment of responsibility/virtue is McConnell, a deeply venal, corrupt man. He's the chief architect of the GOP's descent. Thru the abuse of the filibuster he invented a place for Rs to go which didn't include governing.

Last night bemoaned DC's slow vaccination rate, and received a thoughtful response from my councilmember @marycheh.

It's well worth reviewing, below.

My take - however we got here, time now for DC to offer a clear plan on how we catch up to rest of US.
According to the @washingtonpost DC is next to last both in first shots and in total # fully vaccinated.

National leaders Alaska and New Mexico have vaccinated twice as many of their residents as DC.

Important issue - DC folks need to get noisy here.

DC chose to vaccinate essential workers who live in MD, VA but work in DC. It's a defensible strategy, but the practical impact has been to short DC residents.

Again, goal now is for @MayorBowser to make clear how we catch up. Status quo unacceptable.

Outrageous lying by Republicans about vaccines a sign of them waking up how badly damaged their mismanagement of COVID and refusal to join Biden in rapidly defeating it has left them.
When parties make mistakes of the magnitude the GOP has made in recent years it can keep you from power for years, decades. What happened to them last century.

GOP didn't only oppose Biden's wildly popular plan to bring a rapid end to COVID, restart the economy, they didn't even bother to offer an alternative.

Their message - we are uninterested in ending COVID, restarting the economy.

Whaaatt?

The absence of virtue - across the board - in Trump’s MAGA/GOP remains hard to comprehend.

It is close to a collective madness now. As others have said it is now longer a political party as we know them - just folks saying crazy shit on TV.
Things GOP doing now - letting folks freeze to death, sending them directly into COVID line of fire, taking bribes from rich donors for access to the vaccine, just making crazy shit up all the time - so outside any understanding of public good, morality.
The corruption described in this IG report by Chow/McConnell is Olympian in scale, mindboggling. @maddow did a great take on it last night.

If Rs looking for folks playing too nice-nice w/Chinese Communists they should start w/their Senate leader.
