Looking to get a publication under your belt to strengthen your portfolio for grad. school application?

Let’s go!

1) Contact your Bsc. Supervisor to see if the results of your thesis are worth publishing.

2) Contact & collaborate with junior/friendly lecturers in
your department.

3) Join a Prof’s group as a research assistant. Gain hands-on experience and publish in the process.

4) Contact colleagues who are neck deep into research as they already know how to go about publications.
If you have an idea, share with them and come up with publications. Check @VictorOyebanji_ TL to see how 2 publications came from collaborations with colleagues.

5) No access to a research lab.? Work on review articles and share your thoughts
on advancing the topic. Also consider virtual research by using modeling & simulation or data analytics tools.

6) If you’re a writer or columnist, those articles you’ve published also serves as a writing sample for grad. school

7) Publish engaging and field-specific
articles on LinkedIn. I know an applicant who used this approach and those articles were acknowledged by the admissions panel.

How to construct a cold email in 3 simple paragraphs

-Choose an appropriate subject
e.g. Prospective Graduate Student in Pipeline Corrosion Mitigation-Fall 2022

P1) Short intro, a brief mention of past experience(s), & relevant skills gained through them.
(some skills the prof. requires in a typical grad student), and why you are making the contact. If your research project has been published, include a short URL. If not, state it was your BSc. thesis and indicate in your CV under section "research projects".
P2) Academics enjoy talking about their research. Since they are experts in their field, there is a small subset of people they can discuss with. Once you give them a chance to discuss by asking the right questions, they would be itching for it.

CONVERSATION!

Him: I really wanna study abroad with a scholarship in Data science/Software engineering based on my 3 years of relevant work experience. Although, I have a Bsc in an Animal science with a 4 pointer CGPA. How can I go about this.

Me: Very possible if you are not
looking for scholarships. But no serious admissions/scholarship committee would commit such funds on you seeing that academic background mismatch at the expense of others with relevant background. They would wanna see Data structures, Algorithms & Statistics in your transcript.
Him: So what do you suggest?

Me: You can apply to programs with a good fit for your background. You can audit computer related courses while doing your MSc. In fact, you can apply “Machine learning to model Animal diseases data” in your thesis. Hell yeah, you can even

THE WAITING LIST

You might have been informed that you are currently waitlisted for a program but have no idea where you stand. People have been chosen “out of the blue” from the waiting list while others knew it was only a “matter of time”.
I believe you deserve to know your current ranking on that list (if there’s any). This can be done by writing an email to the graduate/admissions coordinator.

How can you do this?

1) Start with the proper salutation and introduce yourself (include your application no.)
2) Remind the recipient that you’ve been informed of your waitlist status.

3) Ask if you could know your current standing or how “high up” you stand on the waitlist.

4) Include a proper closing with an anticipation for a response.

Your message may be acknowledged or not.

Some clarifications on the WES USA evaluation process

1) WES USA evaluation is different WES Canada evaluation used for immigration

2) For grad. studies in the USA, WES (course-by-course evaluation) is usually employed. wes.org/about-wes-cred…
3) The WES evaluation isn't accepted for all schools in the US. You should do it only if required by the university (see image).

4) Some schools have an internal transcript evaluator. In this case, your unofficial/official HND or Bsc transcript must be provided. For this,
it may not be comparable to what is obtained from WES. Some schools would even ask for a "SCHOLARO GPA" equivalent of your transcript when applying. scholaro.com/gpa-calculator/

5) To the best of my knowledge, WES USA evaluated transcript isn't acceptable to any country worldwide
