In Taylor, TX, a group of formerly detained women led a car caravan and rally to #ShutDownHutto. Follow @Grassroots_News for more photos from the action.
Instances of abuse are well-documented, including a # of women bravely coming forward in 2020 w/ a whistleblower to report gynecological procedures occurring at the Irwin Detention Center in GA without informed consent. #FirstTen#CommunitiesNotCagestheintercept.com/2020/10/27/ice… 2/
In Fiscal Year 2020, 21 people died in ICE detention, including eight from COVID-19, the deadliest year in ICE detention since 2005. Under the Biden administration, 3 people have already died while in immigration detention #FirstTen#CommunitiesNotCages 3/ cnn.com/2020/09/30/us/…
The #FirstTen to #CommunitiesNotCages Week of Action starts now! Join us as we call on the Biden administration to shut down 10 detention centers & end detention contracts as a first step towards ending the immigration detention system.
Since taking office, @POTUS has yet to address ICE’s deadly system of immigration detention. Instead, his administration has deported thousands of people and continues to detain over 14,000 immigrants. #FirstTen#CommunitiesNotCages
Even more, people continue to tragically lose their lives to immigration detention. Since January, three people have died in ICE custody, including Diego Fernando Gallego-Agudelo who died on March 15, less than two weeks after claiming asylum at the border #CommunitiesNotCages
Today, we’re launching the “First Ten to Communities Not Cages” campaign, demanding the shut down of 10 immigration detention centers during the first year of the Biden administration.
2020 was the deadliest fiscal yr in ICE custody since 2005. W/ detention #'s currently at their lowest in 20 yrs, #FirstTen to #CommunitiesNotCages underscores the urgent need to close detention centers & release people now. 2/15
#FirstTen is the next phase of DWN’s national #CommunitiesNotCages campaign to shut down ICE detention centers, stop the expansion and construction of new facilities & ultimately abolish the detention system in its entirety.
A group of 14 people is currently risking arrest, chaining themselves to the mansion gate of CA Governor Gavin Newsom. The group, includes several community organizers who are undocumented, as well as immigration attorneys. #FreeThemAll
The protest falls some four months since the Governor’s initial shelter-in-place order. In the ensuing 130 days, doctors, health experts, and community groups have repeatedly urged the Governor to take action to save the lives of incarcerated people #FreeThemAll
Demands include:
*Use his power, including mass clemency & emergency release, to #FreeThemAll in state prisons
*Stop transfers from state & local custody to ICE & between CA prisons
*Stop the expansion of immigration detention in CA
1/ Happening now: DWN, @NIJC, @ACLU, and @MigrantFreedom are holding a briefing with members of Congress to call for routine surprise visits of ICE jails in their districts and states. #EyesonICE#AbolishDetention
2/ ICE’s inspection process fails to provide an accurate assessment of the conditions people in detention face by lacking independent, regular, & unannounced inspections of detention facilities. We need #EyesonICE to hold the egregious agency accountable.
3/Immigration detention is the unjust practice of incarcerating immigrants while they await a decision on their immigration status. Within a broader system which targets low income people of color, @ICEgov locks up people in abysmal conditions where a culture of abuse permeates.
