First press conference by @JoeBiden starts now. Announces that they will now set a goal of 200 million vaccines on first 100 days.
.@POTUS starts with all accomplishments in response to COVID pandemic.
"Help is here and hope is on the way," @POTUS says.

First question is from @AP about other issues facing opposition by GOP.
"I got elected to solve problems," @POTUS says, adding that first focus is COVID. Other problems are long-time problems like guns and immigration that will get solved too.
.@POTUS says he will move forward on key issues and GOP needs to decide if they want to decide to work together or not.

"I've been hired to solve problems, not to sow divisions."

Next q from @Yamiche about immigration.
"I guess I should be flattered because I'm a nice guy," @POTUS. "Truth is, nothing has changed," noting seasonal cycles in migration.
.@POTUS blames Trump for eliminating $ support for Central America and for dismantling current system, adding that he is rebuilding that.
"The vast majority of people coming to the border are being sent," @POTUS says. "Tens of thousands."
Fort Bliss will be made available for unaccompanied kids, @POTUS says, noting that it will be 5,000 more beds.
"Because Mexico is refusing to take them back," @POTUS says about families, adds that "all families should be going back." Says that he is negotiating with Mexico. Adds that unaccompanied kids won't be sent back.
.@POTUS adds that there is a phone verification system to take in kids or not. Suggests that some phone numbers could be those of traffickers.
.@POTUS has a list of what journalists to ask in order?
Great question by @CeciliaVega about humanizing this immigration debate.
.@POTUS said he won't turn unaccompanied children at the border.
.@POTUS says that Trump admin did nothing when two hurricanes hit Central America last year
.@POTUS says that actions by parents to send their children on a trek to the border are a "desperate act."
.@POTUS seems irritated by answering a question about his views on Border Patrol facilities conditions
.@POTUS says he will commit for press access to BP facilities once his plan is in place, answering @kwelkernbc's question
As to when that press access will granted, @POTUS said "I don't know."
Now @POTUS says he makes no apologies for ending MPP or separating parents from their kids.
"My plan is to run for re-election. That's my expectation," @POTUS says.
"I have no idea that there will be a Republican Party, do you?" @POTUS says.
Point of this tweet is that @POTUS is making no apologies for ending two of Trump's most extreme and controversial immigration policies.
Presser now at about 40 minutes long.
"I have not been able to unite the Congress but I have been able to unite the country, based on the polling data," @POTUS says.
Presser now at 50 minutes long.
Now a question from @Univision about phone verification for migrant kids.

@POTUS says that the situation will get better or else people in federal agencies will lose their jobs.
And @POTUS brings up possibilities that some of these phone calls made to parents and family members might not be parents or family members.
.@POTUS saying that "people don't want to leave" their countries.

Notes that these are all not little babies and kids but mostly teenage boys.
As the dad of a 18-yr-old boy, let's not pretend that they are adults. They are still kids.
And it ends. 1 hr press conference.
And am "shocked" there was not one question about Puerto Rico statehood. Cue up the estadistas' mood right now.

In my latest opinion piece for @PostOpinions, I chronicle the last week of immigration coverage from major US news outlets and why I decided to not publish certain @AP stories at @latinorebels (part o @futuromedia).

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/…
In that piece, I found out that the @AP was addressing some of the words used in certain stories. They went on the record with me and also shared an internal memo about their recent decisions regarding immigration stories.
In the interest of informing the public and being fully transparent as a way to inform other editors, this is the internal memo I received from the @AP (4 tweets to follow).

Subject: From the Standards Center: A note about the current increase in border entrances

Biden says that the US will have enough vaccines for all adult Americans by the end of May. Says it is a war-time effort.
All American adults will eligible for vaccines by May 1, Biden says. Adds that a new vaccination website will be launched as well.
"I need every American to do their part. That's not hyperbole. I need you," Biden says.

The is the US position: hey, our policies have literally decimated your region for countless of years, creating places where violence, corruption and fear rule, but don't try to flee these places because you are not welcome in the US. Don't come up here.
Am still stuck on the fact that Jacobson is saying that Central American society has greatly benefited from US foreign assistance.
Jacobson says they have learned lessons from previous work in Central America with then-VP Biden.

Admin needs to be "really explicit" with gov't of Central American countries having real commitments to stop root causes.

This is a top of fold story in today's @BostonGlobe and @jazmineulloa wrote a very strong story. Here's hoping Globe continues to provide more space for these types of stories and not just be one and done, which is what has happened in past. (Been a Globe subscriber since 1991.)
My one take on this excellent story is that I don't necessarily see it as "gains" for GOP since the level of support fell into historical patterns. It had to do more with how Dems didn't really need to win FL or TX. I will stand by that one. Because of AZ, NV, WI, MI, PA and GA.
So there are two angles here but not necessarily on the same level. We will see how much the data plays into it in the next coming weeks.

Ok, the one day I take a break from political news, am sharing a story. I manage and play in an Over50 soccer league. Our team has been playing for a while. Used to be Over40 but now we get old.
Today one of my teammates got a yellow card for cursing in English at the referee. Meanwhile, because I know all the Portuguese curse words, the other team was cursing at the referee during the first half all in Portuguese.
During halftime, I told the ref that I am calling BS. My guy says one curse word in English and you give him a yellow card. You are 10
players on other team cursing at you on Portuguese and you do nothing.
