1+2. It will be popular with Asian + Black community
3. Pop Smoke (RIP 🙏🏿) is in it (+ unreleased track from The Woo!)
4. It's a basketball movie
Asian + Black + Hip Hop + basketball
= 4 most influential parts of modern pop culture
= recipe for internet virality
Social issues:
Last year we had much needed conversations about anti-BIPOC racism.
But we haven’t really addressed the other elephant in the room: racism against other minority groups and racism from one minority group against another minority group.
I think Boogie will be a good catalyst for us having more of these types conversations.
(Here are some resources for how to be an ally to the Asian and AAPI community.)
Style check: Whoever, the stylist for this movie is, needs a raise and a promotion. They did a great job.
In just 3 minutes, I saw:
2 Aime Leon Dore shirts
1 old school Polo bear shirt
1 Karl kani shirt
Small attention to details like that really adds to the vibe of the movie
The casting is A1.
I think Boogie has the type of look and swagger that a lot of Black Women will like and I think Eleanor has the look and vibe that a lot of Asian Men will like.
Overall though, both of them make a good couple that I think people of all races and genders can “ship” and imagine themself dating either Boogie or Eleanor.
Yooo, this wasn't part of my original thread, but while I was looking for their twitter handles.
I realized both actors have the same first name 🤔
I saw a comment: "the main actor has acne scars and that gives me hope for my acting career"
Such an interesting point.
More roles played by diverse people that are attractive by normal people standards and not by unrealistic hollywood standards is better for society.
Sidebar: this wasn't part of my original thread
But while finding pictures, I noticed multiple clips of Alfred dunking
This is a very subtle but important point.
These simple clips dispel a lot of myths of the forms: "White/Asian men can't jump/aren't athletic"
We underestimate the degree to which movies shape public consciousness.
Directly as a result of this movie we will see:
1. increase in number of interracial couples 2. An Asian player in the NBA. He will list Albert Chin as his inspiration in an interview 10 years from now.
In conclusion, this movie will end racism.
Jokes aside, obviously no single movie can end racism.
But this is the perfect movie for 2021.
Nice mix of: making ppl more empathetic + think about important social issues in a non-overwhelming, feel-good way + fun entertainment
Finally, can we please give a standing ovation for the director @MrEddieHuang. 👏🏿
I still remember him from Fresh off the Boat Days, good to see my man doing big things.
He's very talented and did an amazing job with Boogie.
