protection for a demo:
'Bump caps' cheap, light, relatively subtle, will mitigate harm from a strike.

Shin pads - worn on lower arm, raise arms to block baton strikes

Big thick gloves (biker style)

Mask, bigger than surgical.

How to deal with police dogs?
Try and stay calm, their main target will be flailing limbs, especially if you are running.
A line of protesters arms behind backs and they will usually back off.

How to deal with police horses?
If static / slow the horse is unlikely to hurt you, but be wary of strikes to the head from its rider's baton and feet.
If moving fast it is dangerous. stick together and do not run faster than needed, moving to the side is good.
