Dozens of demonstrators stand in silent vigil outside the Georgia Capitol in protest of the new elections restrictions law and in support of state Rep. Park Cannon, who was arrested at the statehouse after knocking on @GovKemp’s door during the signing ceremony. #gapol
Trailed by dozens of demonstrators, Cannon walks with MLK III in a somber march to the Capitol, with a brace on her left arm. #gapol
The Jolt: Even as @GovKemp was denying charges that the sweeping elections changes he signed didn’t suppress the vote, authorities outside his office were dragging away a Black legislator who knocked on his office door to watch his remarks. #gapolajc.com/politics/polit…
@GovKemp One veteran GOP activist worries that Republicans “seem to have done the impossible.” “Passage of a bill that does nothing substantive to address concerns of GOP voters while maximizing blowback from Democrats which will be amplified in the press." #gapolajc.com/politics/polit…
.@GOPChairwoman Ronna McDaniel: “Democrats are peddling a false narrative ... We look forward to defending this law in court.” #gapol
“Why are you arresting her?” This Facebook Live video from @TWareStevens shows the moment authorities detained state Rep. Park Cannon as @GovKemp was behind those doors signing elections restrictions into law. #gapol
@TWareStevens@GovKemp Said Stevens, who is at the jail w/ Cannon now: "She wasn’t banging on the door. She was knocking on the door. She was being respectful. She knew he was signing a bill that would affect all Georgians – why would he hide behind closed doors? This isn’t a monarchy." #gapol
Georgia @GovKemp has signed legislation that tightened voting rules after last year’s close presidential race by imposing voter ID requirements, limiting drop boxes and allowing state takeovers of local elections offices. #gapol
@GovKemp Kemp on critics who label the measure as "Jim Crow in a suit and tie." - "I'm sure they will threaten, boycott, sue, demonize and team up with their friends in the national media to call me everything in the book." #gapol
@GovKemp Uhh ... the feed cuts out as Kemp asks an aide "what's the problem?" #gapol
On a party-line vote, the Georgia House just adopted a measure that work restrict drop boxes, require voter ID for mail-in ballots and gives the Republican-controlled Legislature more authority over local elections officials. #gapol
The measure is now sent to the Georgia Senate, which has adopted its own version of the measure. I’ve heard from multiple sources there’s an outside chance the two chambers hash out their disagreements *today* for final passage though Monday might be more attainable ... #gapol
The expanded eligibility - which starts Thursday includes all Georgians 16 and over. "Confirm your spot in line as quickly as possible,” Kemp said, adding:
“This is our ticket back to normal, and we’re getting closer to that point every day.” #gapolajc.com/politics/all-g…
Supply of the vaccine remains tight in parts of the state, particularly in metro Atlanta, where many residents are traveling to other parts of Georgia to make appointments in areas where there’s less demand for the doses. ajc.com/politics/all-g…
