Lorraine Gardens, Dowanhill ( James Thomson 1890) #glasgowwestend /
Symmetrical double villa by David Barclay (1899) at Lorraine Road /
The end of Kensington Gate -also by David Barclay ( 1902-03) -a delightful, serpentine terrace with good stained glass/
Mid 19th century ( on right) villa on Kensington Road with ( on left) extension in Thomsonesque manner by Alexander Skirving ( Alexander Thomson’s last draughtsman) with its own carriage road and gate piers. /
Gently Curving terrace at the east end of Westbourne Gardens, Kelvinside of c1879 which Pevsner thinks is based on a design by Alexander Thomson. Looks like it could be @AThomsonSociety /
The north side of Westbourne Gardens is probably by James Thomson (no relation, just confusing) in c1872. This view is used on the cover of a book of essays “Middle Class Housing in Britain” containing his perceptive PhD thesis on the West End by MA Simpson /
Worth picking up if you find it.
The southern side of Westbourne Gardens is in a Gothic style, very unusual in Glasgow. 1876. The end pavilions may show an influence of Professors’ Square at Gilmorehill /
At the west side of Westbourne Gardens a short, very Thomsonesque terrace. 1875. Probably by Alexander Thomson and altered in execution after his death/
Round the corner, Great Western Terrace by Alexander Thomson. 1869 et seq. Probably Thomson’s finest terrace and undoubtedly the most monumental on Great Western Road. /
The next terrace heading west is tiny, really only three villas joined together. Lancaster Terrace of 1875-6 is rather pretty /
The term-pilasters flanking the doors are its highlight /
Just before Hyndland Road, a villa by Alexander Thomson’s last partner Robert Turnbull c1876. In Thomson’s manner but fussier than Greek T would have done. END.

Lenzie is “a suburb of Glasgow although separated from that city by open country” ( Pevsner) which developed after a station was opened in 1842 ( this the station of 1900). The Victoria Road and Alexandra Road area has many fine villas in the style of Alexander Thomson. A thread.
Warwick Croft c 1875 is “the only villa in Lenzie which, despite alterations, looks as if it might be authentic Thomson” ( Gavin Stamp, “Alexander’Greek’ Thomson”) @AThomsonSociety /
Another view of Craigard. If not by Thomson this must be one of Robert Turnbull’s best in Thomson’s manner, or based on an earlier plan./
There’s a slight dispute as to whether these ‘60 steps’ from Queen Margaret Place to Kelvinside Terrace and relevant retaining wall of 1972 were by Alexander Thomson, although most of the experts are clear enough. The designs look like Thomson to me. #glasgowwestend /
