Everybody ready for The Social Gathering (@thesociallondon) at 6pm? I know it's nice out, but it's even nicer back in 1991! Join us in the time machine...
@thesociallondon Here's the link to the tunes. Press play at 6 and pour a cold one... mixcloud.com/soniccathedral…
@thesociallondon So we start with the voice of Martin Hannett talking to Tony Wilson about his production techniques. Martin died, aged just 42, on April 18, 1991…
@thesociallondon This is one of his last ever productions, ‘Get Better’ by New Fast Automatic Daffodils…
@thesociallondon There’s some footage of Martin being pushed around in a shopping trolley by the band here:
@thesociallondon Popped in to see Martin last time I went to Manchester…
…he’s not far from Tony and Rob. Wonder if they’re all getting on?
Next up, Slow Bongo Floyd, who toured with New FADs (and remixed previous single ‘Fishes Eyes’). I bought this 12” for 15p from Sound N Vision Records in Barnstaple. Good effort from Epic’s chart return reps there.
This remix (the 11 O’Clock Mix) isn’t on YouTube, but there’s a great blog post about them here: acidted.wordpress.com/2009/11/16/s-i…
Does anyone have any pics of them in 91, then? Still can't find any of me :(
Nearest I could find!
This is Ariel, featuring a youthful Tom Rowlands from the @ChemBros
@ChemBros Was reading an old Chapterhouse interview in Melody Maker recently (as you do) where they said how they went to the same school and Ariel were going to be remixing one of their songs… wish that had happened!
@ChemBros Always thought ‘Pearl’ could be improved with some Italo house piano!
@ChemBros Ah, ‘Happen To Die’, which I think is my favourite song by @thecharlatans!
@ChemBros @thecharlatans (Shonky mix there)
@ChemBros @thecharlatans This is the long version which, back in 91, was only available on Indie Top 20 Volume 12!
@ChemBros @thecharlatans May as well have just put that CD on instead. Look at that line-up 😍
@ChemBros @thecharlatans Who asked for a Candy Flip B-side. Anyone? This is ‘Candytuandi’ from their underrated ‘Redhills Road’ single. Ric Peet from Candy Flip used to work with the Charlatans and later @ulrichschnauss and @APOF among others as an ace FOH man:
@ChemBros @thecharlatans @ulrichschnauss @APOF This is the first appearance tonight of the “Milli Vanilli sample”, which was ubiquitous back then. It's from here (skip to 3.30):
Ooh, bit of Bonham!
The Dream Academy's original version of Lennon’s ‘Love’ was a bit Candy Flip, but this ‘Dream House’ remix is basically a mash-up with Deee-Lite’s ‘What Is Love’ and it’s ace @nicklairdclowes!
They didn't really have mash-ups in 1991 (unless you count Jive Bunny). Anyway, the backing vocals on here are by Hare Krishna devotee Poly Styrene!
Pan-pipes!
Just a year before, in 1990, @tearsforfears were the first band I ever saw live. Now they were embarrassed to use their own name... on their best release in years! B-side ‘Johnny Panic And The Bible Of Dreams‘, rejigged by remixers du jour Fluke:
@tearsforfears The politician granny had resigned the year before 🎉
My other favourite band from childhood were @OfficialOMD and this version of their 91 comeback megahit is really great (I didn't admit this to myself 30 years ago):
@OfficialOMD Note: Milli Vanilli is underneath there somewhere!
Fellow Factory Records alumni @cabaretvoltaire with ‘Legacy Of The Computer’ – a B-side of their ‘What Is Real’ single. It's not on YouTube or anywhere so you'll just have to imagine its bleeping genius:
@cabaretvoltaire Further proof of Richard H Kirk's genius... a track from the first ever @WarpRecords release on CD by Sweet Exorcist (his project with Richard Barrett):
I'd rather ‘Psych Jack’ than Fleetwood Mac!
The next part of our mini psych-fest is this classic from Meat Beat Manifesto (yeah, it was out as a single in 1990, but the ‘Version Galore’ comp was 91!):
Following that with MBM mainman Jack Dangers’ 'Dirtiest Dub' reworking of the @shamen1’s ‘Hyperreal’:
Love this song, whatever version it’s in. The last Shamen single released during Will Sin’s lifetime and no trace of Mr C. This from Dance Energy in 1990 is great:
It’s Presence – the band put together by former @thecure man @LolTolhurst. This remix apparently uses elements from previous Shamen single ‘Make It Mine’ and is a bit of a banger!
Was amazed when I read an interview with them in @NME and they were living in Devon (somewhere near Chulmleigh, I think). I couldn't believe someone who had been in THE BLOODY CURE lived about 10 miles from me. You can see it in this interview:
@NME My only game of football for the Great Torrington School team was as an unused sub in a 14-0 win at Chulmleigh circa 1986 :(
@NME On a happier note, I released a single for Lol’s son Gray’s brilliant band @topographiesSF a couple years ago, and he also played a great live drone set down at @thesociallondon while Ryan from @smellybdrmm DJed! Remember FUN?
Some Fall advice for the insect posse from Mark E Smith on this banging remix of ‘So What About It’ from The Fall’s superb ‘Shift Work’ LP:
The Fall always did great remixes
Almost done, so time for some almost shoegaze... this opening track from @KitchensOfD’s 91 classic ‘Strange Free World’ is just utterly perfect!
@KitchensOfD What an incredible guitarist Julian Swales was. All this noise from a three-piece!
We finish where we started... with one of Martin Hannett's last ever productions. This is a lovely B-side from The High. Vastly underrated band!
And that’s it. Thanks for joining me and thanks for having me @thesociallondon. All on board the time machine back to 2021 (sorry, it’s shit, but I hear the weather’s nice). Let's do this again next month and one day soon IRL! Cheers!
