At the risk of being cited for fulfilling Godwin's Law, Hitler is famous for saying that the bigger the lie, the more weight it carries. And this one's pretty big. Just how big is it? Let's take a look, shall we?

First, let's deal with the smaller lie, that "DiAngelo is just a corporate sensitivity trainer." According to her CV, she's a whole lot more than that. In addition to her Ph.D. dissertation, "Whiteness in Racial Dialogue: A Discourse Analysis"...

...at the U of Washington, she's also served on the faculty there, plus at Smith College & Westfield State U, published 24 peer-reviewed journal articles, authored chapters in 9 books, wrote or co-wrote 3 books, completed 2 academic research projects, & gave 12...

...peer-reviewed academic presentations. To say that "DiAngelo is just a corporate sensitivity trainer" is an egregious falsehood. Her academic history would qualify anyone as an active scholar in her field.

But exactly what is her field?
5/18

According to her website, her "area of research is in Whiteness Studies and Critical Discourse Analysis." This is consistent with the subject of her Ph.D. dissertation. And what exactly are Whiteness Studies?

It may (or may not) surprise you to learn that Whiteness Studies (aka, Critical White Studies) are a branch of Critical Race Theory & discussed in pages 83-90 of Delgado's & Stefancic's 𝐶𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑅𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜𝑟𝑦: 𝐴𝑛 𝐼𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛, 2nd ed.
7/18

It may (or may not) also surprise you to learn that Delgado & Stefancic also edited a book back in 1997 titled 𝐶𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑠: 𝐿𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐵𝑒ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑀𝑖𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑟, further solidifying CWS as part of CRT.
8/18

In academia, "Whiteness Studies" or sometimes simply "White Studies," and of course, "Critical White/Whiteness Studies" (sometimes abbreviated as "CWS," which I'll use from this point on) has been an acknowledged branch of CRT for quite some time now. For example...

"This paper draws upon critical white studies, a branch of critical race theory..."

—Meredith Reitman, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, "Uncovering the white place: whitewashing at work," Social & Cultural Geography, Vol. 7, No. 2, April 2006, 270.

And...
10/18

"In addition, the application of concepts from the field of whiteness studies—a branch of Critical Race Theory..."

—Angela Gina O'Donnell, "Radical Ambivalence: Race in Flannery O'Connor," Ph.D. dissertation, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2018, 3.

And...
11/18

"This study is grounded in literature on Critical Whiteness Studies (CWS), a branch of Critical Race Theory."

—Beth Link, U of TX, "White Lies: Unraveling Whiteness in the Elementary Art Curriculum," Jrnl. of Cultural Research in Art Education Vol. 36(3) 2019, 12.

And...
12/18

"…scholars have extended critical race theory with the development of critical whiteness studies..."

—Ellis, "Critical Race Theory and The Impact Of Oppression Narratives on the Identity, Resilience, and Wellness of Students of Color," (MA Thesis, Boise State, 2020), 15.
13/18

It's worth pointing out that Ellis cites Delgado & Stefancic's 1997 𝐶𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑠 to establish her point that CWS is an extension of CRT. It's also worth noting that in the academic literature going back 2 years prior to...
14/18

...𝑊ℎ𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝐹𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦, DiAngelo was already explicitly identified as a CWS scholar who'd made important contributions to that field (cf. 𝐴𝑝𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑎𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝐴𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝐶𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑎𝑙 𝑆𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑠, 2016, 234).
15/18

All this should dispel the myth, propagated by Bradly Mason (@AlsoACarpenter) & others, that DiAngelo is not a CRT scholar. She's certainly a scholar & not "just a corporate sensitivity trainer," and she's certainly a CWS scholar, which is widely acknowledged by those...
16/18

...actually know what they're talking about to be a branch of CRT. Thus, DiAngelo's a CRT scholar.

When referring to a particular gastroenterologist, nobody says, "Well, he's not a 𝑑𝑜𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟; he's just a 𝑔𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑠𝑡."
17/18

That's because gastroenterology is a branch of medicine, so to be a doctor of the former is to be a doctor of the latter.

It's amazing that someone so vaunted (by himself & others) for being so well-read in CRT doesn't know...
18/18

...that CWS has been part of it for at least a quarter century now. Given the boldness of his pontifications, don't you think he should? 🤔

19/18 😅

I probably also should've cc'd: @Kdubtru; @TigerlillySusan.

I regret any pain or harm my oversight might have caused. 😉
