Five years ago, VICE, Buzzfeed and Vox were poised to disrupt journalism and now they’re falling apart and mostly a development league for the NYT. Congrats to their management!
Since this is now 500x bigger than I initially intended I want to amend the above post to say that Vox is basically doing ok (relative to the other outlets, I'm guessing) even if its losing some top talent.
Last thought: the lesson of Substack isn't that readers love heterodox writing. It's that most outlets publish something or employ someone that readers don't like, which makes it easier to justify not subscribing or paying.

The @esportsawards nominations are open! I've worked with some fantastic esports journalists over the past year who all deserve nominations. I'll thread some below.
Teddy Amenabar (@TeddyAmen) deserves a nod for his OWL coverage, which ranges from granular League minutiae to touching portraits of players in the scene.
Gregory Leporati (@LeporParty) has tackled tons of stories about esports breaking into the mainstream, and in ways that might be tough to recognize from inside esports.
