Hey @amandacarpenter, I've been reading your thread about boycotts and Georgia, and I really think you are completely not understanding the history of Black people in America and the African Diaspora. So allow me to share some things with you. 1/10

First @amandacarpenter, start with this book on the history of Operation Breadbasket. It started with Rev. Leon Sullivan in Philadelphia. He told MLK about it, presented to SCLC, and it was adopted and renamed Breadbasket. It leveraged boycotts for Black economic gain. 2/10

MLK put @RevJJackson in charge of it. Also, @amandacarpenter, read or listen to MLK's April 3, 1968 "Mountaintop" speech where he spoke of boycotts and the need to "redistribute the pain." 3/10

Next @amandacarpenter, look up the Polaroid Revolutionary Workers Movement thehistorymakers.org/taxonomy/term/…. They began the divestment campaign against the racist South African apartheid government. 4/10

Next @amandacarpenter, look up when Arizona refused to make MLK's birthday a holiday. The @NFL moved the Super Bowl as a result, and a number of conventions cancelled meeting in the state. That's called protesting with your dollars. 5/10

Let me go back @amandacarpenter to 1967, when MLK delivered the "Where Do We Go From Here?," Address Delivered at the Eleventh Annual SCLC Convention kinginstitute.stanford.edu/king-papers/do…. He spoke of how they boycotted a milk company in Ohio. 6/10

Also @amandacarpenter, didn't the @NBA pull the All-Star Game in 2016 from Charlotte due to the transgender bathroom bill. google.com/amp/s/www.nbcn… 7/10

Also @amandacarpenter, the @NAACP boycotted South Carolina for 15 years due to the Confederate flag. Who joined them? The @NCAA postandcourier.com/archives/naacp…. 8/10

Also @amandacarpenter, the @NCAA made it clear to Mississippi that they would not hold ANY championships in the state as long as they had the Confederate flag. google.com/amp/s/www.nyti… 9/10

So @amandacarpenter, in every instance you could argue that someone was hurt financially due to a boycott. So if politicians do crazy laws, they can expect a reaction, and that might mean a boycott. They better think of the $$$ consequences before passing the bill! 9/10
