A year ago I tried the Moderna vaccine to see if it was safe. (Spoiler: It is!) Now, on my #COVIDvaccine anniversary, I’m happy to share that I just got a 3rd dose. This booster experiment will reveal (1) if strain-adapted vaccines boost immunity & (2) whether they are safe.
I’ve heard many people say they don’t want to be the 1st in line to take a new vaccine. They’d rather wait & see how it goes for other people.
They ought to know that some of us have been vaccinated for a year already! My health has been monitored around the clock – no issues.
I’ve had my blood drawn. I’ve donated white blood cells. I’ve even agreed to have my genome sequenced. Based on months and months of these observation, we know the vaccines are safe.
Now we will repeat that same careful process for another year in order to learn whether it is safe to take a Covid-19 shot annually. What will the side effects be? Will they be more intense or easier? Only one way to find out.
I’d like to think I am not alone in agreeing to test a new vaccine that scientists think will help end a global pandemic. Clinical trials are an essential part of modern medicine & the people who run them dedicate their lives to the process. I feel I am in good hands.
If there is anything you’d like to know about my vaccine testing experience, reach out here on Twitter. I’ll try to answer what I can. I believe it’s important to share what the process looks like so we can all feel good about it.
There's no failure here — this is a big reason why we do clinical trials. Doctors don't know the right dose ahead of time, and need to learn what's well tolerated.
Even safe meds can't be taken at 10x doses.
I haven't divulged all these details before bc:
1. For a while, it wasn't clear what happened to me.
2. I learned recently that 2 other high-dose participants may have had something similar.
3. It's hard to talk abt vaccine safety w/o triggering anti-vax ppl.
There's an astonishing link between COVID-19 and HIV — at least when it comes to vaccines. I've not seen anyone report on this in the press, so follow me here.
This is an 18 year journey through science.
THREAD (1/10)
Let's do this in reverse order: @Moderna was the 1st company to put a COVID-19 vaccine candidate into people. (I’m one of those people). Their vaccine is based on the coronavirus Spike protein.
You've seen this iconic image — those red bumps are Spike proteins.

Spike protein is an obvious choice for a COVID vaccine. If our immune system gets to see those spikes, there's a good chance it'll create antibodies to shut them down. Bye bye virus.
