The reason I’m doing Alison Collison commentary instead of the usual machine shitposts right now is bc I’m a first gen Asian immigrant that went to a public school and dealt with holier-than-thou gatekeepers like her the entire time.
Your parents come barely speaking the language, sometime fleeing war or famine, and desperately try to figure out how to give their children a chance. Work multiple jobs to have a shot at a good school.
You have no idea how the social capital of extracurriculars work. People think your food is weird (or, I was on discounted school lunch). You keep your head down and do your best at what you can - the schoolwork you get.
Your family’s only friends are often other immigrants. You help each other out, pick up each others’ kids, share resources. If you’re lucky the kids do well, have a shot at scholarships.
Then people like @AliMCollins, a literal millionaire SF landlord, starts turning her nose up at schools that are “too Asian”, or that Asians “don’t get it” - yes, you’re right, we didn’t. Who exactly was going to explain the wink-nod “classy” cultural activities to us?
I’m lucky bc my dad worked construction and I got to hang out w some of his red-blooded coworkers and pick up the cultural cues. How to be not be “too Asian”. I went to college on scholarship and part time jobs. Many aren’t so lucky.
If you don’t do well, the hard right sees you as “useless immigrants”, if you do well the hard left sees you as “white supremacist”, or at least @AliMCollins does
Extra gross that the cohort that @AliMCollins has decided to scapegoat, Asian immigrants going to public school, are ill-equipped to push back given the language barrier their parents often face.
If you read this thread and feel visceral disgust at Alison Collins’s hypocrisy, support @WeAreTogetherSF which does great volunteer work: they’ve been helping parents and students affected by the protracted shutdown orchestrated by Alison.
A tale of two SF merit-based schools:
Lowell:
61% Asian
35% disadvantaged/discounted lunch
SOTA (@AliMCollins sends her children):
42% Asian
24% disadvantaged/discounted lunch
Yet @AliMCollins only attacked Lowell for being “elite” and cancelled merit admissions there 🤔
2/ communism is dangerous because it gives the state a monopoly over everything. Those CEOs and monopolists you hate under capitalism? Make them legislator, judge, jury, and executioner as well. That’s communism
3/ capitalism is not statecraft, nor is it a perfect solution to unbound problems. It’s very good at rapidly finding optimal solutions to parameterized systems. The state exists to set proper parameters based on its societal values, which are worth debating
For reference, SF’s per capita budget is significantly higher than NYC’s but SF is the one with uninhabitable streets, sandbagged development, underfunded schools and transit, record setting property crimes, and Supervisors letting it all burn
Joking aside, it was very edible, the limon was a bit strange but I ran out of Cheetos Puffs which was my first choice. The leftover milk is not as weird as I thought it’d be. Honestly think savory cereal should be a thing.

1/ the human brain is really good at “normalizing” colors in a scene given context clues. ie the spectral wavelength that hits your eye may be remapped you a different color in your perception. See Adelson’s illusion:
2/ the challenge is that photos remove viewers from spatial and illumination context. You ever look at an unflattering picture and think “why am I so blue/yellow/red/etc?” Lights IRL are tinted, and your brain normalizes it for you. The camera records the actual tint though.
Walking around San Francisco today smells like an industrial Asian city in the 90s but with dirtier streets and worse infrastructure. Anyone that thinks this is worth preserving is delusional.
I think people put up with it bc SF is naturally blessed with beautiful climate, but we broke that too. So now we try not to breath ash as we dodge human feces and potholes on crumbling roads we have to use bc our mass transit runs like once an hour when it’s not broken.
So now my relatives in Taiwan, where the per capita income is $24K w a lower tax rate than California, text me to ask if I’m ok and if I need any help. lol.
