Today we do a little bit of Nigerian History Class.
The details of the how IBB put Nigeria into the OIC (Organization of Islamic Countries) and it's resultant effect.
THREAD!
2. Early January 1986, IBB almost brought Nigeria to a religious war when he "smuggled" Nigeria into the OIC.
The French news agency, AFP broke the news that fateful evening and The Guardian newspaper picked it up.
The agitation by Nigerian Muslims for Nigeria to join
3. Started in September 1969 by the Late Alhaji Abubakar Gumi, (yes.... Sheik Gumi's father) who was at the time the Grand khadi of the entire Northern Nigeria.
He headed the Nigerian delegation to a meeting of Arab countries in Morocco.
Gen. Gowon, who was head of state...
4. At the time did not want any "wahala" because he sensed it would split Nigeria. (Demographers have said Nigeria is evenly split between Muslims and Christians)
Gowon promptly wrote to King Hassan of Morroco to disown Alhaji Gumi and his men saying they were on their own....
5. Gumi and his men were barred from attending and we're merely observers.
It was a blow to Gumi and his group but he had put Nigeria on notice.
All subsequent govts after Gowon, including Buhari distanced themselves from the plan.
5. Now IBB toppled Buhari
Babangida's close friends like MKO Abiola started putting pressure on him to admit the country in OIC citing economic benefits for the country
In December 1985, OIC once again invited Nigeria to its conference in Fez, Morocco
It was a routine invite..
6. It only merited an instruction from the Min. Of External Affairs to the Nigerian ambassador to Morocco to attend as an observer.
The perm Sec took a copy to IBB and he bizarrely (maybe naivety or intentional) asked Rilwan Lukman, Minister of Power, a man of great clout and
7. Resources be given diplomatic cover as an official delegate.
Now the Min. Of External affairs gives such cover. But IBB sidelined him (The bow-tied Bolaji Akinyemi).
Lukman took along Alhaji Gumi, Abdulkadir Ahmed (CBN Governor), Dasuki (Sec-Gen of Supreme Islamic council)
8. This delegation tended Nigeria's application to join.
The OIC so surprised, they quickly admitted Nigeria. They waived the mandatory rule that countries must wait a year after submitting application.
Now the "wahala" back home.
9. IBB failed to inform the AFRC (the highest decision body in the land. Like an equivalent of our Federal executive Council).
Ukiwe, the chief of General staff (The V.P) an Igbo, Christian was very angry and protested aloud
He resigned Oct 6 that yr (others say IBB sacked him)
10. IBB later retired him from the Navy.
Now IBB was choking with heat everywhere and was confused how to go about it.
He set up a committee led by John Shagaya to look into the matter and it died a natural death from there.
Abacha came and he also kept the issue quiet
11. Obj came and some Christians thought he would make a stand but he infact paid some outstanding dues owed the OIC.
GEJ kept quiet on the issue too. And he did a "E no concern me" stance.
Have we gained from the OIC economically? We are still researching this.
END!

A four year old girl tells her mum to say Hi to aunty Ngozi and points to an empty side of the house. Her mom pays no mind to it and continues doing chores.
30mins later, mom gets a call that Aunty Ngozi died an hour ago
Maybe I will read through this thread tomorrow morning because "fear-fear".
Maybe I will drop my own experience.
My father's funeral took months to plan as per Senior Chief.
I saw him in dreams in between looking very tired and tattered saying "Why have we refused to let him rest". I told him it wasn't my decison to make. He moaned and wailed.
