The U.S. and China are engaged in an increasingly intense confrontation over Beijing's human rights record – exchanging near-daily salvos over allegations Xi Jinping's government is committing genocide against the Uyghur people. usatoday.com/in-depth/news/…
The Uyghurs are a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority that the Chinese government views as a threat in part because some have sought autonomy.
The Biden administration formalized its accusations that China has engaged in "genocide and crimes against humanity" as part of an annual State Department human rights report. It cites "mass detention" of the Uyghurs, and evidence of forced sterilization, rape and forced labor.
But China is pushing back hard, accusing the U.S. of meddling in China's internal affairs and blasting the genocide label as a fabrication of Western researchers and biased foreign media outlets.
