Since a few people asking - I recommend Shadow of Chernobyl first with Zone Reclamation Project for bug fixes. If you bounce off that, check out Call of Pripyat. If you like SoC - go through the series via release order (SoC/CS/CoP).
That’s not a criticism towards mods; I love Anomaly and it’s one of the main ways I enjoy the game now. That said, it’s very much built for people who have already played a lot of stalker, and it can be immensely overwhelming for newcomers because of that.
If you’ve played some stalker already and you *do* want a kind of overwhelming and brutal Zone experience, then Anomaly and such may be worth checking out then. You should probably have at least a taste of the base games to understand why Anomaly changes some stuff tho.
The other reason would be if you’re broke and can’t afford any of the games. Anomaly is free. Still, you’ll be very confused about who this Strelok guy is and why is there like a million stalker factions lol
This is just a recommendation for those who want to dip their toe in, of course. If you played the mods outright or your first/favorite game is Clear Sky or such, that’s all good. There’s a lot of different reasons people like these games.

Missing some Tweet in this thread? You can try to
force a refresh
The last time I played this I used the DarkXL engine to play it - which does allow you to play at modern resolutions and refresh rates. Unfortunately, it looks like the site hosting DarkXL is gone.
I'll dig and maybe I'll put up another host. You can play it via dosbox, too.
I should note that DarkXL is an imperfect port and some scripting issues and minor gameplay changes are present, so it's kinda up to you to pick between accuracy vs. modern framerates/widescreen, ect.
