Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. Over the last 24 hours, we identified 887 new cases. Another 432 variants were confirmed, meaning 39% of active cases are now variants. (1/10)
More than 9,102 tests were completed yesterday & the positivity rate was 9.9%. 312 people are in hospital and, sadly, we have learned of 4 deaths since April 1. My heartfelt condolences to everyone mourning a loved one today. (2/10)
We have posted the usual detailed provincial data at alberta.ca/COVID19. This includes confirmed case counts, tests and other information from the long weekend, broken down by calendar day. (3/10)
I also want to update Albertans on the #COVID19AB outbreak involving P.1 variants of concern. At this time, the outbreak appears linked to a large employer with multiple sites across Western Canada. (4/10)
The outbreak started with a traveller returning to Alberta from out of province. To date, the spread has been confined to 3 work sites in Central and North Zone, where employees travelled between sites. (5/10)
We have now identified 26 COVID-19 cases linked to employees at these three sites, and their household contacts. So far, only 3 are confirmed P1 cases, but this will likely increase as more results come in. (6/10)
AHS has been working with the operator and cases to ensure anyone at risk of exposure is offered testing and quarantines to limit the spread. This includes employees at other sites who may have been exposed.
Anyone at risk is being directly contacted and supported. (7/10)
A separate, unrelated P1 outbreak has been reported at a workplace in Calgary Zone. There are currently 5 cases linked to this outbreak, including 1 confirmed case of the P1 variant. Health officials are also working with the employer and supporting anyone at risk. (8/10)
Thanks for your patience. These investigations are complex & it's important that we ensure information is accurate & that anyone at risk is directly contacted before sharing details. We also must balance the public desire for info with protecting patient confidentiality. (9/10)
I am concerned about the rising cases, including variants, in our province. Please keep making safe choices and limit in-person interactions whenever possible to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 provincewide. (10/10)

We are currently investigating a significant #COVID19AB outbreak in Alberta involving P.1 variants of concern (the variant that originated in Brazil), linked to a returning traveller. (1/4)
Health officials are working hard to limit future spread and reaching out directly to those at risk of exposure. AHS will ensure that anyone at risk is isolated, offered testing twice and connected with supports if needed. (2/4)
The public health investigation is underway and we will update Albertans on Monday. (3/4)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: Over the last 24hrs, we ID’d 465 new cases & completed about 7.3K tests. Our positivity rate is about 6.6%. We have now administered 497,280 doses of vaccine. (1/4)
We ID’d 197 new cases of the variants of concern, about 18% of our active cases. There are 290 people in hospital for COVID-19, incl 53 in ICU. Sadly, 3 new deaths were reported in the last 24 hrs. My condolences go to everyone who is mourning a loss today. (2/4)
Case numbers may fluctuate from day to day. We need to see a downward trend in indicators some of which, like hospitalizations, lag. This means that the actions we take today will reflect in the numbers we see 1 or 2 weeks from now. (3/4)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: We have admin 487K+ vaccine doses. Over the last 24hrs, we ID’d 456 new cases & completed abt 7.5K tests. Our + rate is 6.1%. There are active alerts/outbreaks in 339 schools, or abt 14% of schools w/1,474 cases since Jan. 11. (1/8)
We ID’d 110 new cases of the variants of concern, about 16% of our active cases. There are 280 people in hospital for COVID-19, incl 48 in ICU. Sadly, 5 new deaths were reported in the last 24 hrs. My thoughts are w/ anyone mourning the loss of someone they loved. (2/8)
It is important that every one of us understands the power that our actions have & how crucial it is that we all make choices that protect our communities. Cases, variants, & hospitalizations continue to rise & we cannot take the risk of easing any measures at this point. (3/8)
There are tweets circulating that claim that Alberta is holding vaccine supply as “surplus.” This is inaccurate, there is no surplus held in storage. (1/4)
Shipments can be sporadic and vary greatly in size. (2/4)
When we receive a large shipment, it is distributed as quickly as possible. Every dose of vaccine available is being provided to Albertans within days of arrival in the province. (3/4)
I would like to provide an update on #COVID19AB vaccine safety.
After thorough reviews, Health Canada, the European Medicine Agency & others have all found that the AstraZeneca vaccine is not associated with an increased overall risk of all blood clots. (1/7)
Only 25/20,000,000 people who received AstraZeneca reported the issues that created these concerns. These involved specific types of rare blood clots: 7 reports of clots in multiple blood vessels & 18 of a blood clot in the brain, mainly occurring in patients under 50. (2/7)
The European Medicine Agency is looking closely at these patients to see what happened and whether the AstraZeneca vaccine might be linked. (3/7)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB numbers: Over the last 24 hours we have identified 696 new cases. Of those, 130 are variants of concern. About 13% of total active cases are VOC. We have completed 11.9K+ tests. Our positivity rate is 5.7%. (1/4)
There are 276 people in hosp, incl 48 in ICU. There were no new deaths reported to us over the past 24hrs. It has been 5 days since a COVID-19 death was reported in continuing care. This is a positive sign that vaccines combined w/public health measures are working. (2/4)
Simple acts such as physical distancing from anyone not in your household & staying home when sick will help protect us, our families & our communities. I know we’ve all had enough of COVID-19 restrictions, but we must be vigilant a little longer. (3/4)
