Prince Philip, the only son and fifth child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg, was born on 10 June 1921 in Corfu.

He was styled as a prince of Greece and Denmark
In 1922, Prince Andrew was banished from Greece after a coup d'etat. Prince Philip's uncle, King George V, ordered a Royal Navy ship to collect them.

The family relocated to Paris, but Philip went to live with his Mountbatten relatives in England in 1928
In 1933, Prince Philip was sent to Salem school in Germany, run by Kurt Hahn.

Forced to flee Nazi persecution, Hahn went on to found Gordonstoun School in Scotland.

After transferring there, Prince Philip was a popular if academically undedicated student
Prince Philip excelled at sport and fell in love with sailing. In 1939, he left Gordonstoun to become a cadet at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth.

In the same year, he met the young princesses Elizabeth and Margaret during a royal tour of the college

A year later, Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth married in Westminster Abbey. He took the title Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich.

After their honeymoon in Hampshire and Balmoral, the couple moved to Malta, where he was posted by the Navy
In the next few years, the family grew.

In 1948, Prince Charles was born, followed two years later by Princess Anne.

In 1951, the Royal couple took their first major tour together to Canada and the United States
On February 6 1952, King George VI died while Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were on a tour of the Commonwealth. He was the one to deliver the news that she was now Queen
In the following years, Prince Philip got involved in a number of initiatives.

He founded the Duke of Edinburgh (@DofE) Award scheme, was appointed first president of the World Wide Fund (@WWF) for Nature and became the first member of the Royal Family to be interviewed on TV
Ten years after Princess Anne was born, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip welcomed their son Andrew in 1960. Four years later, Prince Edward was born.

Prince Philip also made history during their youngest's birth by being the first royal husband to be present during the delivery

In a letter to the Queen, Prince Philip wrote: ‘To have fallen in love completely and unreservedly, makes all one’s personal and even the world’s troubles seem small and petty.’

After the war was over, Prince Philip remained in the Far East to collect and bring home prisoners of war, arriving back in Portsmouth on 17 January 1946.
