BBC1, BBC2 and ITV abandon their schedules for the rest of the day, and BBC radio just plays soft instrumentals on repeat.
What an absolutely ridiculous country.
We really do think we're still a great imperial power, don't we?!
Meanwhile, 127,000 other people die. The government responsible is POPULAR; the BBC, currently donning sackcloth and ashes, refuses to report on said government's responsibility and gross corruption.
This, my friends, is how media distraction in the Banana Republic of Great Britain and Northern Ireland works.
Bow your head. Shag that flag. Pray silence for the great man. And don't, whatever you do, question any last bit of it.
You know which other countries do this sort of thing when a particular individual dies?
Tinpot dictatorships. It's like the Soviet Union.
The UK is deeply, profoundly, incredibly unwell.
It was offered heart bypass surgery in 2019. It angrily rejected it, denounced the person making the offer, and doubled down on destroying itself.

Tottenham: no major trophies since 2008 (and nothing important since 1991)
Villa: no major trophies since 1996
Leeds: no major trophies since 1992
Newcastle: no major trophies since 1969 (domestically, since 1955!)
Sunderland: no major trophies since 1973
Wolves: no major trophies since 1980
West Ham: no major trophies since 1980
Granted, several of these clubs have had their problems, plenty of them - but all this is a reflection of how awful modern football truly is.
Modern football, even for big clubs, is about finishing 4th or, at worst, 17th.
Modern football is utterly monopolised by the same handful of super-monied clubs ALL THE TIME. And it's a Europe-wide problem, hardly just an English one.
There is such a gulf in quality between the two halves of the Champions League draw that the unthinkable - Liverpool somehow winning it again, in Istanbul! - is a bit more likely now than it was before the draw.
The only side with no chance at all of winning it are Dortmund.
But the top 3 sides in Europe are all in the same half. It's a coinflip between them frankly.
ANYONE could make it out of the other half. Including Porto, who really have something about them. Something reminiscent of 2004.
I imagine most people will predict Bayern-Man City and Madrid-Chelsea for the semis.
I've a hunch that Poch's Paris will emerge from one half of the draw. And probably blow it in the final against... surely it couldn't happen?
THREAD: Dario Gradi. Just what the heck is going on here? Why is he being protected?
The FA have confirmed that he's effectively banned for life. Yesterday, its Director of Legal and Governance said:
“I think where someone’s removed from football office for safeguarding reasons, that will be because we have we have seen that there’s been an assessment that that particular individual could potentially cause or pose a risk of harm to children".
Yet they won't provide any more specifics. That is quite unfathomable in circumstances as grave as these. Circumstances in which:
1. Gradi “did not consider a person putting their hands down another’s trousers to be an assault”. 🤮🤮🤮
This thread is about my experience of men. Toxic men. It's only based on personal experience so it's bound to be flawed - and I'm not about to hold all men responsible for those toxic men I've often encountered. I've been a victim of them too in my own way.
Before I start, I want to make one thing very clear. Nothing in this thread is intended to detract in the slightest way from what is, fundamentally, a women's conversation. Because women suffer at the hands of toxic men every day.
It's intended to ADD to it.
Because men also suffer at the hands of toxic men in a way which is more or less never discussed. Men who suffer from toxic men are essentially invisible. I know I've suffered as a consequence of that; so do others. Many of them.
I have the utmost respect for @jaketapper: his and CNN's coverage is magnificent.
But as he's someone who calls out fake news and the breathtaking, lethally dangerous irresponsibility of other stations, the hill he's chosen to die on re: OFCOM is bizarre.
OFCOM *is* independent
Jake: you shouldn't confuse ingrained American mistrust of government with healthy, necessary independent regulation.
Your industry is completely out of control. Thousands upon thousands have died thanks to its misinformation. ALL industries need regulation.
And with the utmost respect, you're commenting on something you clearly know next to nothing about. It's not a good look.
