The Behind-The-Scenes Conversation
(a fictional mini-play)
[A phone call takes place at the pre-arranged appointed time b/t a high-level North Korean female diplomat and her American counterpart, a man. After exchanging the obligatory pleasantries the conversation gets pithy.]
2/US: You know that at the right time we might take military action - regime change or nuclear first strike - on you, right DPRK?
DPRK: Yes we know. That’s why we have nukes to deter you from those very actions. It’s called
5/batshit insane? It’s you, the great American democratic superpower that nuclearized the Korean Peninsula in the first place, forcing us to follow suit, who now slanders our self-defense military drills in response to USFK exercises targeting us, saying they “threaten” peace,
6/who is leading the way to conflict. We have the right to defend ourselves and we will.
US: Be prepared then.
DPRK: We are already prepared. Do you realize how you are being perceived? Just as Hitler blamed the Jews as a “threat” to the Nazis, you are labeling the upright
7/DPRK who is defending itself from YOUR threats. We have already told you we have no intention of causing trouble w/ the US or anyone. We want☮️, an end to the Korean War and normalized relations w/ you so that we can finally develop economic prosperity.
8/US: Give is your nukes and we’ll help you build a better capitalist Western-style economy that your people will like even more.
DPRK: You still don’t get it. Western capitalism isn’t our cup of tea. Socialism is our way. Why don’t you stick to your own
9/domestic problems rather than being such a fool to think you know what’s better for us than we do.
US: A German-style Korean reunification is our business. That’s why we want your socialism to end and for North Koreans to embrace capitalism and democracy. And why there won’t
10/be any peace settlement until you realize that you’re better off not having nukes.
DPRK: You are out of your mind. Keep dreaming US. Reality will come crashing down on you in one form or another.
US: Is that a threat?
DPRK: We are not threatening you. Our nukes are a
11/“threat” only if you attack us. Why don’t you just leave us alone? Everything will be fine. Have you heard: “Live and let live?”
12/us but we don’t live by your way or by your one-sided rules that are always stacked in your favor and against us. We are not natural-born grifters like the US. We adhere to International Law. Go jump in the lake US and take the UNSC Resolutions with you.
US: You realize that
13/we don’t trust you DPRK? If you don’t agree to fully denuclearize, it won’t go well for you.
DPRK: Now look who’s making threats. We stand by our position. The US poses an existential threat to DPRK and it would be dereliction of duty if our Comrade Chairman didn’t build our
14/deterrence capability up in order to deter you from attacking us. We find it strange that, instead of choosing the option of ☮️, which everyone in the world wants except you, your hostile nature impels you to stay on the path that could bring the world to the brink. It is you,
15/US, who threatens global peace and stability by your hostile policy towards us. You are unable to meet the challenge of the new times and are stuck in the Cold War past. Can you not coexist with us as a nuclear state? We might agree to limit the numbers of our nukes and ICBMs
16/& nuclear subs.
US: You won’t agree to limiting the numbers of our nukes and ICBMs & nuclear subs.
DPRK: No? You never asked us so how would you know?
US: If you’re serious about that DPRK... 🧐 Let me get back to you.
17/DPRK: So you can consult your Quad buddies, ROK & allies who’ll say “DPRK will never set a limit on their nukes, ICBMs & nuclear subs” - even after I just told you we might? Is the US unable to make its own decisions w/out first consulting its buddies?
The Moranbong Band, DPRK's string quartet fronting a rock-n-roll band, is Kim Jong Un’s personally minted, musical-tour-de-force, Millennial vehicle for Propaganda & Agitation and cultural diplomacy and is the cultural weather vane for the regime.
2/Pyongyang's elite and Millennial Gen love Moranbong Band and the Old Guard of Kim's & Ri's parents' generation can’t get enough of them while the West & South Korea sees them only as “North Korea’s version of the Spice Girls”.
3/Yet beneath the masterfully orchestrated and optically polished veneer, Moranbong Band is a whole lot more than just a string quartet fronting a rock-n-roll band.
How much do you know about North Korea's top girl group 'Moranbong Band' ?
2/DPR Korea (now) has Millennial Generation Moranbong Band. Despite the diffs citizens of both countries are enrapt when their dedicated patriotic women perform spiritedly to pump energy into the the people and raise patriotic spirits, hopes & camaraderie.
“It is true that one of the best ways to change North Korea is to expose its people to overseas information — to introduce them the alternative ways of life, to show them that things can be run definitively.”
Kim Jong Un is on a mission to build thousands of new apartments in Pyongyang
The North Korean leader visited a luxury apartment complex construction site to emphasize his push for better housing nknews.org/2021/04/kim-jo…

2/There is so much more to Moranbong Band than meets the eye of the Western lens. Adam Cathcart decodes it all for us:
"What if the Moranbong Band’s first and second concerts were more than simply entertainment for his wife (who accompanied him to both performances), but part of
3/"a larger plan for cultural ties of DPRK with the outside? Are the concerts, in other words, the spearpoint of a cultural offensive by the Kim Jong Un regime along the lines of a Deng Xiaoping-style opening?
