Both the Iran FM, directly, and the US, tacitly/indirectly, linked suspected suspected sabotage op to the diplomatic track to revive the Iran deal gathering momentum: diplomatic.substack.com/p/us-disowning…
On Wednesday—a day after the strategic dialogue with the Israelis—the Biden admin plans to resume Iran nuclear talks in Vienna. “Our focus is, of course, on the diplomatic path forward,” the White House’s Psaki said. “So that’s where our focus is.” diplomatic.substack.com/p/us-disowning…
“Honestly, I don’t think it will derail the diplomatic track in Vienna,” @AliVaez. “But it will make it more difficult for the Iranian negotiators to compromise, and reduce their maneuvering space in the short run.”
Potentially, it could also possibly help “convince the Iranian leadership, that if the restoration of the nuclear deal is such a big concern for Israel, then it should not be that bad for Iran,” Vaez said. diplomatic.substack.com/p/us-disowning…
A recent seeming uptick in Israeli covert ops against Iran is “indicative of the fact that Israel is starting to get really concerned about the restoration of the JCPOA,” as the diplomatic track gains momentum. diplomatic.substack.com/p/us-disowning…
Just how much awkwardness or chill alleged Israeli action might cause in relations with new Biden admin still TBD. Notably SecDef Austin made no public mention of Iran at all after meeting Israel PM today, @LahavHarkov reported diplomatic.substack.com/p/us-disowning…

reading this, as a reporter who deals with the constraints of background and off record source demands, worry this piece risks being used for propaganda. the intel officials in third graph seem to be israeli but do not agree to be id as such
sorry, 4th graf. but concern is same. israeli officials trying to launder propaganda into western media to seem like other western officials sourcing and therefore legitimating it
I don’t see why @nytimes is comfortable with being the vehicle for this, meant to look to readers like it may have US official sourcing but is more likely unidentified Israeli sourcing/possibly propaganda
🧵For some of us in US, esp. in policy, politics, media, the Iran deal issue is of interest. But for Iran officials and the Iranian public, it would seem, it is of far broader interest, given the relevance to the broader Iranian public’s livelihoods.
So the indirect Vienna talks this past week and the process they are part of, while of big interest to me and some others in DC, would seem to raise even more expectations in Iran. If a deal can be reached matters far more to far more Iranians than to most in the American public.
It seems to me the Biden admin would like to reach a straightforward understanding with the Iranians on what would be involved for both sides to return to full compliance. There may be genuine differences in what that would be, and things to quibble over, & some accumulated
thread, Senior State Department official on background call on the Iran deal talks in Vienna this week said on the whole they were productive and businesslike but they still have questions about Iran intent and willingness to take steps to come back into compliance. 1/
Snr State Dept official: If Iran sticks to the position that every sanction imposed since 2017 has to be lifted or there will be no deal, then we are heading for an impasse.
State official: Coming out of this week, it met expectations, but a question mark still hangs over the proceedings.
The parties will reconvene in Vienna next week midweek. The US team will be back.
clarifying what steps to come back into compliance
🧵Snr EU official to Brussels reporters, via @Hannahkaviani: “There is a shared sense of urgency to bring the JCPOA back on track. Delegations came to Vienna in good faith and this week’s extensive and constructive exchanges are encouraging. They brought everyone one step closer
“to the main goal, but there are many other steps ahead.”
“This is a rather complex, but necessary process. There needs to be clarity on what it takes and what is required to return to full and effective implementation of the deal. It will take some time” 2/3
“All delegations are determined to reconvene as soon as next week and continue this work” 3/3
State spox Ned Price on Iran deal talks in Vienna, confirms what Iran's Araghchi said earlier : Expect the talks may resume in the coming days, potentially next week.
Says the talks have been constructive, businesslike, "a step forward."
I was struck that Price today & yesterday is taking pains to describe the talks in Vienna as technical, not strategic....Since Iran rejects the idea of "negotiating" with the US, I suspect this language is about seeing if can get Iran to agree to direct technical talks
Price: “These talks are indirect, and as a result, the mechanics of them can be cumbersome...these are very technical and complex issues. Again, these are not strategic talks, and that is in large part because the strategy...is clear...” diplomatic.substack.com/p/momentum-see…
“I think the result is better than anticipated, largely because the U.S. has changed strategy,” @vali_nasr said. “It put the lifting of sanctions on the table, which it had not done previously.” diplomatic.substack.com/p/momentum-see…
The issue of the sequencing of steps for a mutual US & Iran return to compliance is complex.
”If this is going to work, the only way forward is if both sides take steps simultaneously to end up together at the same destination on the same date,” @hrome2diplomatic.substack.com/p/momentum-see…
