Jumped into a great room just now on @joinClubhouse about 'Starting your second brain' speaker was Tiago from @fortelabs.. here are some key takeaways I observed #productivity #BuildingASecondBrain
Being able to sit down and consume a book (usually 5-10 hours of time investment) or even a long article is a HUGE competitive advantage in our current attention deficient society. Knowing how to capture what you consume will put you even further ahead.
Here's a few tools Tiago recommends.. Kindle highlights for books - Try to read on @AmazonKindle. A digital format will allow you to highlight things you find interesting.. you can then sync these with your note taking app (for me that's @NotionHQ) in two ways...
The free option - Use kindle share feature. Share your highlights to email and then copy and paste the content (which is in HTML) format to your note taking app. This process is fine but much more work. You can automate and save time this using a paid app like @readwiseio...
The paid option - @readwiseio will sync your highlights to your note taking app automatically. I use this and it's a total game changer. You can also sync highlights from websites using a chrome extension also very cool
30-40% of the entire value of creating a second brain comes from just capturing what you consume... So that's great for books but what about articles and stuff?
One problem we have when reading articles or content online is we get sucked right there and then when we see a piece of content on medium, facebook, youtube whatever. Often this content is like junk food.. low quality and bad for you. This is where read later apps come in...
I use @instapaper, and Tiago recommends this and another app @Pocket. These read later apps will save any piece of content to your phone or computer in a seperate app / website. It's simple but there are SO many benefits to doing this...
1) Time delay makes you make better choices - when you return to an article or piece of content later you often realise it's not worth your time.. This means you focus on higher quality content and better information...
2) You've basically created a magazine feed of content that YOU'RE interested in.. not just a feed that is being curated by an algorithm...
3) You can batch process content and get through more - Choose a time when you have time to read many pieces of content at once.. this might be a Sunday morning with a coffee for an hour.. you will enjoy reading more and get through more content...
4) These read it later apps strip away all the addictive, dark patterns and social proofing elements and display the content in simple black and white text.. eliminating all the inbuilt behavioural manipulation. A purer consumption experience...
@readwiseio works within @instapaper so when you find something interesting you can highlight, just like with kindle and it will get synced to your note taking app. The last way to capture is via audio...
@otter_ai is a voice to text app that has one of the highest accuracies of any app out there. Capturing notes via audio is not that common but there are some real benefits...
Often when listening to audio you are doing so because your hands are occupied.. at the gym, cleaning house etc. So using an audio app is a great way to make sure you can still capture...
These notes tend to be of higher quality than typed notes (and way faster to create) as when listening to a podcast or audiobook, as the medium is already in audio it's easier to summarise any interesting ideas via voice...
You usually have a moment of clarity when the point of what is being said is right there in your head, however beware as this goes away quickly...
And that's all I have! Hope you find this useful for a full transcript of the convo (created using @otter_ai) see this link otter.ai/u/4S-EsCeJhUVf…
Thanks 😀
