1. Avoid Cliché
"Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print."
Clichés are lazy and annoying, which can throw off your reader.
Avoid them like the plague.
(See? Annoying.)

Small, not diminutive
So, not accordingly
Reward, not incentivise
You get the point.

3. Simplify sentences
"If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out."
Don't merge together. Merge.
Don't join together. Join.
And for the love of good writing, remove pointless filler words like:
Completely
Absolutely
That
Etc.
(But don't cut what IS needed.)

4. Avoid passive voice
"Never use the passive where you can use the active."
E.g. The seat was broken by the fat man.
Wrong. Why?
Because we don't introduce the main character until the end. It confuses.
The fat man broke the seat.
Much easier for your brain to process.

5. Avoid jargon
"Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent."

Slavish obedience to rules is almost as bad as not knowing them at all.
Good writing is clear communication.
