One of the most pivotal decisions of Joe Biden's presidency is approaching.
On May 5, he must choose between protecting the profits of Big Pharma, or ending the pandemic worldwide by allowing lower-income nations to manufacture COVID vaccines.
Rapidly ending the pandemic worldwide is in Americans' best interests. But that isn't happening.
Only .1% of vaccine doses have been administered in low-income countries.
The longer it takes, the more likely the virus mutates into a vaccine-resistant strain.
Countries like India and South Africa *could* produce their own vaccines right now, but that's illegal because drugmakers like Moderna control the patents.
Nevermind that Moderna's vaccine was developed thanks to billions in U.S. taxpayer funds. citizen.org/news/statement…
Fortunately, the U.S. can spread the vaccine without sacrificing a single dose for Americans.
We've done it before.
In the AIDS epidemic, groups like ACT UP forced the U.S. to allow other countries to manufacture HIV drugs, as @JoiaMukherjee of @PIH explains in our video.
With U.S. backing, the World Trade Organization created a program in 1994 called the TRIPS Council that temporarily waives patent protections for critical medicines.
The U.S. can now use its power at the WTO to grant poorer countries a TRIPS waiver for COVID-19 vaccines.
But the pharmaceutical lobby is fighting hard against it.
All President Biden needs to do to help make the vaccine available to everyone is to instruct the U.S. Trade Representative to vote in the WTO to grant a TRIPS waiver.
The administration has indicated that it’s “thinking about” it. The next WTO meeting is on May 5th.
@justiceisglobal is hosting a national week of action from April 22nd - 29th to call for President Biden to #FreeTheVaccine.
NEWS: This past week, local NBC and ABC affiliates have aired fake "interview" segments that look like news, but are actually corporate propaganda paid for by America's largest business lobby, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
We couldn't believe our eyes. So we went digging.
The segments all feature the @USChamber CEO attacking the PRO Act, a bill that would make it easier for American workers to form unions.
If passed, the PRO Act will be the first major U.S. law expanding worker power since 1935.
The U.S. Chamber is fighting it tooth and nail.
One of the networks that aired a segment was Arizona ABC affiliate @KGUN9 "On Your Side.”
The only way a viewer would know the segment was paid lobbyist propaganda was a chyron that flashed on the screen for a total of 4 seconds.
The COVID pandemic hit many working people hard. But, one group did better than ever.
CEOs of more than 300 of the biggest U.S. public companies saw their earnings increase to $13.7 million per year according to @WSJ. wsj.com/articles/covid…
CEOs are making more than the typical worker in the same company.
-In 1965: CEOs made 21x their median employee
-In 1989: CEOs made 61x their median employee
-In 2019: CEOs made 320x their median employee
BREAKING: More Perfect Union has obtained new details about Amazon’s illegal actions to defeat the union.
The violations make it overwhelmingly likely that the NLRB will overturn the results and give workers a second election.
Details in the video and thread below.
We've learned that at least 20% of the election votes are believed to have come from the illegal ballot dropbox that Amazon installed at its warehouse.
These ballots arrived at the NLRB in large batches on February 12 and 17, according to sources with knowledge of the election.
As a result, a substantial portion of the total election votes are linked to Amazon’s unlawful actions that the National Labor Relations Board specifically directed the company not to take.
BREAKING: More Perfect Union has obtained emails showing that Amazon privately pressured USPS to install an illegal ballot dropbox during the union election in Bessemer, AL.
The emails directly contradict public statements by USPS about the box's origins.
There's more.
The emails were obtained through a FOIA request by @RWDSU.
Many of the exchanges have been almost entirely redacted & any mentions of Amazon officials has been removed.
But here are some key findings that we have been able to glean from the FOIA.
First, we learn that beginning Jan 8—one month before the union vote begins—Amazon repeatedly calls USPS’s “strategic account manager” to say they want to install their own box.
USPS team deliberates Amazon's request and says a “private box may not be utilized.”
The Citizens United decision let corporations and billionaires spend unlimited money on elections—without disclosing it.
The #ForThePeopleAct gives us a chance to break their hold over our government.
“Raising money becomes the full-time job of just about everybody who runs for office. You become like a full-time telemarketer fundraiser.”
@JasonKander explains how For The People Act would give people from working class backgrounds a chance to run for office.
"When I served in Afghanistan, my job was to do anti-corruption and anti-espionage investigations. And then I came home and I got elected to the state legislature, and I was so disappointed to find out how many similarities there actually were."
UPDATE: The public portion of the Amazon union vote could begin today.
Win or lose, one thing is clear: Amazon ran an unrelenting union-busting campaign. Just as it has done elsewhere.
The NLRB found Amazon has illegally retaliated against dozens of workers for speaking out.
Since the pandemic began, 37 workers across 20 cities have filed complaints with the @NLRB accusing Amazon of interfering with their rights as workers.
