.@POTUS just finished his remarks laying out his plans for a complete drawdown of the US war in Afghanistan. I'll link to the full text once it's live, but I think it's REALLY important for progressives and anti-war advocates to show up in this moment. Let me explain why. 🧵
First, let's start with the obvious. @POTUS is doing what many, many of us have LONG called for. Yes, details matter. Yes, he's also doing a LOT we disagree with. And yes, this all should have happened a decade ago. But he's also still doing what we've called for. 2/
More often than not, we're in the business of pressuring, pushing, and calling out when the President isn't doing what we want. And trust me, I'll be back to that very, very shortly. But right now, he's doing what we want and we should recognize that and applaud it. 3/
Because while this is what many of us (and the majority of the US public) wants, this is NOT what the DC establishment/blob/callitwhatyouwant wants. They are nearly universally opposed to this, and they're not hiding that. They're loud and pushing back to reverse this. 4/
This isn't just a hypothetical. After the drawdown in #Iraq. The blob told a story - a lie - that the corrupt Maliki gov't and violent sectarian divide was somehow all irrelevant. The only thing that REALLY mattered was if US boots were on the ground or not. 5/
Let's be clear, they want that and no matter how untrue that myth is about the reality of how ISIS was created or what helped fuel the ensuing violence, it meant that Washington's answer was...more US troops! 6/
If the Blob is allowed to define the narrative again in Afghanistan, if they're allowed to erase 4 decades of conflict, 2 of them with a US military occupation, and somehow claim that it is the LACK of US warmaking that is fueling violence, US troops may yet be sent back in. 7/
But it's also deeper than that. Right now a lot of people still believe that it's bad politics to do what the American public wants and that instead we should do what the blob wants. That was never true, but that doesn't change the fact that powerful people in DC believe it. 8/
So now that @POTUS is doing the right thing, the popular thing, but also the thing the blob doesn't want him to do, it's important to show our power. It's important to show that if you do the right thing, people will have your back. It's important to show up. 9/
At the end of the day this isn't just about finally ending the longest war in US history. It's about preventing the next war from ever starting. To do that, we have to show up and applaud when a President does the unthinkable and actually ends a war instead of starting one. 10/10

A disappointing whitewash from the @DoD_IG as their report on Trump's abuse of active duty military personnel at the southern border came out today. A few thoughts on context and what comes next. <thread>
This report came in response to tens of thousands of activists and 34 Members of Congress demanding the DoD IG look into possible violations of posse comitatus when Trump deployed active duty troops to the border. winwithoutwar.org/progressives-u… 3/
Just how twisted is the Senate GOP #coronavirus bill you ask?
It includes $686 million for new #F35 fighter jets. As you know, fighter jets are well known for their pandemic fighting abilities.
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Oh yeah, they have 2+ years to spend the money on these new fighter jets. Nothing says responding to the urgency of this current crisis like buying a fighter jet in 2022, amiright?!
Oh yeah again, this is part of the nearly $30 BILLION total they're giving the Pentagon. Ya know, the Pentagon, the lead agency in public health and economic revitalization.
Btw, if you wanna fight his kind of madness, feel free to come join us: winwithoutwar.org/join/
Watching the stock market soar today as the worst job numbers in history are reported is beyond infuriating. The delusion happening on Wall Street right now is incredibly deep. <short rant in the form of a thread>
The stock market bounce seems to be based on a series of delusional thoughts. Chief among these is the notion that the economy was strong in February and will soon bounce back to where it was. That's just beyond absurd. 2/
For starters, we are nowhere near past the health impacts of this disease. Nearly every medical expert is currently unequivocal that we are re-opening too early and with too few systems in case to prevent a renewed surge in cases. 3/
Last year the United States dropped 7,423 bombs on #Afghanistan. That's a fairly incomprehensible number. So to help you understand, here's 7,423 bombs. Then imagine how the US would respond if another country dropped one single bomb on us. 💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣
A lot of friends and colleagues have asked me over the past few days how worried I am about the current situation with Iran. The short answer is, very. Let me explain. <thread>
In the nearly 9 years I have been working @WinWithoutWar and working on these issues, this is by far the closest the United States has been to a major military conflict with Iran. Neither side has reason or intention to back down at this point, and all signs point to war. 2/
The US is currently led by a man already impeached & awaiting trial for putting the nation's interests second to his own on foreign policy. He is erratic, reckless, and has demonstrated time and again that he has no understanding of basic facts or complexity of these issues. 3/
Wanna know how broken and captured Washington is by the Pentagon and the corruption of our nation's "defense" budget? Well, look no further than the soon to be enacted budget "deal." Let me explain. <long thread>
You're no doubt hearing a lot of crowing from Democrats about how the deal they struck with Trump gives more money to "non-defense" spending than to "defense." Let's be clear that by every measure, save the one they're using, that's simply not true. 2/
This is gonna get a little wonky but stick with me. In 2011, Congress passed the Budget Control Act, the BCA, as part of a deal with @BarackObama. The BCA capped federal spending for a decade. When the "supercommittee" the BCA created failed, those caps went even lower. 3/
