Today was “fun with gusty crosswind landings” day, up and down 11 times.
On final, the airspeed would go from 65 to 80 to 60 in a few seconds, just due to shifting winds, requiring constant adjustment. No such thing as a nice steady descent today.
On landing, the changing winds could cause you to float for several seconds, drift to one side or the other, or suddenly sink. It was like a roulette wheel. The winds weren’t that strong, but they were fickle.
Saw one guy land behind me in a taildragger. He could not get his tail down. When he finally did, he went into a (gentle) ground loop. Fun all around.
It was great experience, and all the landings feel so much better than before (especially early on, before the wind really picked up) but it was not the day to attempt a first solo. Waiting patiently for a less rambunctious day.
It was a funny day. Between 100-500 feet it was real rocky-rolly. You could really feel it after takeoff, clinging into the pattern. Once you go into the pattern (1000 feet) the wind was there, but steady, smooth. Then when you descended, you had to put on your dance shoes again.
* climbing to the pattern
We just beat the rain, which is rolling in now and expected to last all through tomorrow.

1. I'm going to geek out now and give you a tour of my Cessna 172 cockpit, which I've been learning to fly (in real life). For the pilots among you, feel free to tune out, because this is pretty basic. But I get a lot of questions from non-pilots about what they are looking at. Image
2. In the upper center of the panel is the attitude indicator, which (when it's on - the engine is off here) uses a gyroscope to tell the relationship between the plane and the horizon. This is extremely important when visibility is low and your senses can fatally deceive you. Image
3. To its left is the airspeed indicator, in nautical miles per hour. The green bar shows normal operating speeds with flaps up. The white bar shows min/max operating speeds with flaps down. The red line is the never exceed speed - your airplane could break up from the stress. Image

It's the wrong way of talking about the issue. Offer a different interpretation of what the Amendment should mean. Even Heller, considered a huge victory for 2A advocates, clearly leaves room for regulation.
Heller did not outlaw bans on machine guns, bazookas, and grenades. The conservative majority opinion left legislatures with the latitude to decide which kind of weapons were reasonable for individual self-defense.
I've read a lot of interesting books on the 2nd Amendment, but the best so far has been "Gun Fight" by @adamwinkler. You will learn something from it, regardless of what position you approach it with. amazon.com/Gunfight-Battl…

Socialism with nationalist characteristics.
My response to the accusation that this was merely a spurious and flippant allusion:

If the US had adopted realistic goals and limited itself to them, it could have been called a great success.
The reality is that we were never going to transform Afghanistan into an island of peace and stability. Only Afghans can do that. What we could do is stop Afghanistan from being used as a safe haven for plotting large-scale attacks on the US.
But it is always tempting, especially when achieving success in more limited goals, to the think that with a little more effort you can achieve greater and more lasting things.
