1/ @MichaelMechanic's new book, "Jackpot: How the Super-Rich Really Live—and How Their Wealth Harms Us All," is out this week. It's both enraging and fun, and even if you think you're well versed in income inequality, guarantee you'll learn stuff: simonandschuster.com/books/Jackpot/…
Thinking about this a lot lately. Cops are fed a false narrative about the likelihood of ambushes, which jacks them up. And yet it's also true that American public is more armed and less regulated than almost anywhere else. Mix in racism...such a horrible recipe.
Sane reforms would include: Armed police responses reserved to actual threat to life. End bullshit traffic stops and other encounters rife with bias. Require way more stringent training for cops—emphasizing deescalation—and same for way-better regulated gun license holders.
We've done a slew of stories on how police departments embraced "warrior training" and how deadly that has been: motherjones.com/politics/2017/…
Hike today to Mammoth (aka Sunset) Rocks, Near Bodega Bay, where these giant rock outcroppings are subbed smooth in places by, so the experts say, mammoths. (The ones in the ocean, full of birds)
Good case to be made in hat Sonoma County is one of the most beautiful places on earth
People should, IMO, not loose confidence in J&J or any of the vaccines. This reaction is *extremely* rare, if a direct linkage at all. Hopefully the pause will tell us exactly how rare, who might be at slight risk, and ⬇️ what to do/not do if reaction happens.
Not to diminish things but a reminder that things that also can expose people to risks of blood clots are flying, and taking the pill. And yet we do because the risks are low, and precautions or alternate means can be utilized.
A few weeks ago I asked my movie club if we kept picking films about mid-life crises or if it just felt that way because I was in one.
Missed last week. Open the text thread to see what we're supposed to watch tonight. It's The Big Chill. 😱🤣
This movie came out when I was still in high school and it always felt like a passport to Boomerland.
What's the GenX Big Chill? There must be one but can't think of what it is.
Before I even start this thing, just going to say that it's truly bizarre that the Trump campaign used "You Can't Always Get What You Want" as one of/the main theme songs. Even without this movie, but with it? My god.
All I want is to convene a labor or historian, a trauma specialist, a costume designer, and experts in the various ethno/social groups at hand to discuss Peaky Blinders in depth.
Love the show, though there are some DP/sound design/weak-sauce ghost and truly over-the-top flaws in the most recent season that I hope will not curse the next.
All that heavy breathing/Ghost/aggressively sudden phase light stuff in a couple S5 eps could have been cut and the season would have been totally the better for it!
