A King Consort who overstayed to become a puppet.

Story in the evening ...
Friedrich was born in 1676 to Karl, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel and Marie Anna of Courland. Hesse-Kassel was formed in 1567 when Landgraviate of Hesse was divided among the sons of Landgrave Philipp. Friedrich was a descendant of Philipp's eldest son, Wilhelm. 1/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_I_of_Sweden#/media/F
Friedrich led the Hesse-Kassel troops in the War of Spanish Succession on the Habsburg side. His results were mixed though it is said he fought bravely. In 1700, he married Luise Dorothea of Brandenburg, but she died childless in 1705. 2/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Blenheim#/media/File
In 1708, he proposed marriage to Princess Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden. She was the younger sister of King Carl of Sweden. Over the past century, Sweden had grown into a regional power, expanding its territory. But it also brought them enemies. 3/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulrika_Eleonora,_Queen_of_Swed
In 1700, Denmark-Norway organized an alliance with the Russia and the Polish-Lithuania Commonwealth. But Sweden was up to the mark, carving out victories in the initial battles. Denmark-Norway and the Commonwealth sued for peace. 4/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Empire#/media/File:Swe
But Russia persevered defeating Sweden at Poltava in 1709. The defeat changed the tide against Sweden. With her brother away at war, Ulrika became the regent of Sweden. Her elder sister, Hedwig, had already died in 1708. 5/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Poltava#/media/File:
Friedrich and Ulrika married in 1715. King Carl died in battle in 1718. Ulrika pushed her candidacy for the throne. Hedwig's son, Karl Friedrich von Holstein. was the other candidate. The Riksdag supported Ulrika, but she had to restore many powers to Riksdag in return. 6/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_XII_of_Sweden#/media/F
Ulrika was crowned Queen while Karl Friedrich left Sweden, eventually ending up in Russia. Ulrika's rule was short though, as she abdicated in her husband's favour in 1720. The Riksdag, meanwhile, retained most of its powers and made all the important decisions. 7/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Frederick,_Duke_of_Hol
After King Carl's death, Russia pressed for advantage, eventually confirming their annexation of Estonia, Livonia and Ingria in 1721, and building their new capital, St Petersburg, in Ingria. Sweden's days as the major regional power was well and truly over. 8/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Ingria#/media/File:Sw_
King Friedrich continued to rule in name, but without any power. The Riksdag led Sweden into an "Age of Liberty". In 1730, Friedrich inherited Hesse-Kassel, which he handed over to his brother, Wilhelm, to rule on his behalf. 9/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_VIII,_Landgrave_of_Hes
In 1741, Sweden tried to retake area lost, but failed. In the resultant treaty, the Russian Empress imposed an heir on to the Swedish throne. Her heir in Russia was Karl Friedrich's son. For Sweden, she put Adolf Friedrich, Karl Friedrich's cousin, who became King in 1751. 10/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_%C3%85bo#/media/Filehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Frederick,_King_of_Swede

When you run out of land to rule, you make more land to rule. Meet a King who tried to do that quite literally, and also led to the creation of the host of some of the most powerful legal judgements in the world today.

A Catholic King in hunt for a lost Protestant throne and an emerging Orthodox nation; a nation at its peak, but also at the beginning of its end.

Story in the evening ...
Sigismund Vasa was born in 1566 to Duke Johan of Finland and Katarzina of Poland. In 1568, Johan and his brother, Carl, overthrew their elder half brother, King Erik of Sweden, making Johan the new King. A generation earlier, Sweden had broken away from the Roman Church. 1/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigismund_III_Vasa#/media/File
King Johan took a softer approach, attempting to reconcile with the remaining Catholics in Lutheran Sweden. Sigismund was raised as a Catholic by his mother. In 1573, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth became an elected monarchy after Katarzina's brother, King Zygmunt, died. 2/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_elections_in_Poland#/med

If somebody had asked me in 2019, what my biggest concerns for the future were, I would have said war and disease.

Disease, because a pandemic is always inevitable, and unpredictable. Is the field of medicine progressing fast enough to outrun the evolution of pathogens? 1/4
Looking back, the way we have handled the Covid pandemic is positive, provided it is because we have progressed in the field of medicine and not because as a disease, Covid is less dangerous than H1N1. What toll would Spanish flu have taken had it come a century later? 2/4
If the marmot/13th century origin of the plague in medieval Europe is correct, there is a line of improvement from plague to H1N1 to SARS-Cov-2. So, here's hoping we are on the right track in outrunning pathogens. 3/4

So, Dad bought this land in the late 1980s in a court auction. The court documents referred to it as a "parambu" (essentially non agricultural land). At the time, the entire area, apart from a house next door (and perhaps the one next to it), was undeveloped. 1/6
Sometime in the 1990s, when he asked for permission for construction, it was refused saying it was agricultural land, which was also the legal opinion we received at the time. We could have paid a high percent of the land value and gone ahead, but it wasn't worth it. 2/6 Google Maps
Cut to February 2021, the state notify the updated records of agricultural land. Our land is not among them. The area has now grown into a town centre with hotels and a hospital. But despite the notification, Revenue records are still stuck in the 1960s. 3/6
