I was traveling in France and worked with a French gentleman who worked in the firm which gave us some automation hardware systems.

A proud French he took me to city tour almost everyday after our day’s work was over. Paris is a historical city with art & architecture!

I was awestruck with his knowledge about European history & in particular knowledge about French art & history.

When we discussed families, he mentioned he has 2 sons busy with schooling.

Gentleman mentioned that the family has a History Teacher who comes home to

teach both their kids, and it is twice a week. Some of his friends have somewhat similar arrangement.

He emphatically said, you know nothing if you don’t know your history and you must ensure kids know the real history and it is passed on from one generation to another.

He said you will feel for your nation only if you identify with your history; good, bad, sad, glorious - hardly matters.

He left me thinking as he dropped me at the hotel.

I was wondering where are we going wrong & do we have real history being taught to kids ? ;

Did we ourselves learn the true history, history that matters ?

Are we teaching real history to our kids, are we educating them about one of the oldest civilisations on earth, are kids aware of our heritage, the greatness of our art, architecture and Vedic Culture ?

Is government the custodian of nation’s history and will decide what we will kids learn ?

Talking of text books & contents; who nominates these historians who deliver designer history to us? Why their selection, as a process, is not through public participation?

Our historical texts suffers from Short Term Memory and is heavily burdened by freedom era struggle and how chosen few have been instrumental in getting us freedom, ignoring and writing off many others.....

Large part of history, a much greater golden period is overlooked &

and made to forget.

Much of history would be unknown to my own kids & am equally to blame.

There is a need to critically evaluate the texts and the curriculum taught to kids.

Government should explore option to create a group of non partisan historians & academicians

who should work to identify the important missing links and ensure each decade, century & era gets its due representation.

Nation is by people, great people, heritage & civilisation that has been in existence for thousands of years and can’t be hostage to few hundred years

and by people who want us to know our nation through their tainted lenses.

We owe to us and our future generations !!
