its probably not true but it just feels fandom was less toxic before the internet. its almost better we couldnt communicate with people marching in lockstep on a 24-7 basis.
like comics? well, to talk about it you have to wait until monday to link up with the other comic book nerds at school, or at a convention in some hotel ballroom a few months from now.
i started collecting comics around '84-85 and i feel like back then it was just fine to read the ones you liked and ignore what you didnt and if the one you liked sucked, well next month was coming and no need to get so mad about any of it.
I talked to an 8 year old this weekend who referred to "back in 1992" like it may as well have been when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
To be fair this is how I thought about the 50s and 60s when I was 8
My reaction when my friends kids keep referring to "when you and Uncle Oliver were in high school a long time ago," and I want to correct them because we *just* graduated in 1994 and I realize oh right that was a long time ago:
i had forgotten how on the nose network dramas can be then i watched the law and order episode based on the central park karen thing. it was still entertaining but it felt like most of the episode was the cast looking into the camera saying "racism, we totally get it, america."
every time the show cut to ice-t, it was like there should be a greek chorus going, "BECAUSE HE'S BLACK, WE TURN TO HIM FOR A TAKE"
and also the program was like, "we know you all love Olivia Benson, so we're totally not going to make her into a racist, but maybe you'll learn something if we point out your beloved character has racial blind spots."
its heart was in the right place. just not subtle.
i think liberals are falling into a false sense of security fwiw
fwiw this isnt pessimism or despair. its more like seeing people celebrate v-e day when in reality you havent even landed on normandy beach.
i get accused on here often of being an eeyore. i dont see it that way but maybe im not communicating it correctly.
i think in general liberals - democrats are ill-prepared for true political trench warfare. i think despite their lack of ideas gop is more loaded for battle.
its also why i absolutely dont watch cable news unless something absolutely huge is happening. but also because cable news is very bad and political twitter is absolutely addicted to it. righties watch fox and libs cite msnbc people like theyre family. ick.
on the rare occasion i do pull up cable news i practically get physically ill. i really dont know how so many of you do it. it was my job for years, but otherwise i avoid it like the plague. its so stupid.
