I've been looking through EQD's Community Soapbox articles and I found someone in 2017 arguing that RD can't be a lesbian because that would please "close minded" people.

Is it any wonder the community turned out this way? He got top billing lmao.

Perhaps having "apolitical" straight white guys running the fandom's largest sites was not the greatest idea. Do they vet these things? Do they have any PoC or LGBT staff at all? Hell I'd do it for free.

I like to call this "TVtropes homophobia".

She can't be gay because it would either "be too obvious" or "not make sense for her character". Make some OTHER character gay, not a main character. Sorry, there's just not enough REASON for her to be gay, those are the rules.

Another article gives the same reasoning but even more long-winded and with loads of circular logic.

The show can't have gay characters because...people wouldn't like it and there would be "negative press". This is an official EQD writer's article

This sort of insular thinking comes from only elevating the voices of one particular type of brony without listening to anyone else. Combine that with a hands-off approach to vetting content and you get a community ripe for alt-right, anti-LGBT radicalization.

Now you might say "Well woot, these are old articles, surely nobody thinks like that anymore! Its 2021 after all"

In other communities you'd be correct. But this fandom has a way of being incredibly slow to change on this stuff. G5 will probably have to deal with the same stuff.

My only hope is that with the benefit of hindsight we as a community can learn to stop uplifting these bad-faith arguments and treated them as genuine, well-meaning viewpoints.

They're not. And we deserve better than this tripe.
