As Mayor, I will put the public back in public safety. Black & brown New Yorkers need to know the police are going to treat them fairly if we ever need them. That starts with rightsizing the NYPD budget. I’ve committed to cut over $1B & invest those funds back into communities.
I will also conduct a full audit of the NYPD’s budget – including the out-of-budget expenses such as settlements – to assess the facts and make necessary cuts, including to the number of uniformed officers.
I will restructure the NYPD from top to bottom, starting with strong civilian oversight – policies that make clear what policing is & is not, what conduct will not be tolerated, & policing priorities – which need to be problem-oriented & community-driven, instead of punitive.
This verdict is a moment of justice for the nation — what we do next is up to us.
