HEY!

You GUYS!

1/
Yayyyy! Okay, on Sunday I did a #TableTopGails thread, but it had to be broken into two parts. WELL, HERE IS THE SECOND PART!

And it’s got some of the COOLEST STUFF!

Let’s look! Please feel free to jump in with questions or comments, that’s the best part!

2/
Legal note, all these games today were given to me, I didn’t pay for them, nor am I paid for commenting on them. All opinions are my own. I have not played most of these yet so I would love to hear from those who have! I do this for the love of games, hooray!

3/
First, the lovely people at @TabletopLoot sent these gorgeous creamy dice which I should not leave in the candy dish.

YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH DICE.

4/
This next big batch of games came from the wonderful @Zmangames_, who publish the massive hit PANDEMIC and its many follow up games. This is one of our VERY favorites, so we were excited by this box! First, they sent the base game, awesome.

5/
Next, they sent one of their “HOT ZONE” Pandemic sets, these are supposed to be quicker to learn and play, this one is NORTH AMERICA. I love love love the components for it, they look and feel great. If you haven’t played Pandemic, this might be the jump-in spot!

6/
When I asked all of you what was the best Pandemic spin-off or expansion, most of you chose this one, PANDEMIC FALL OF ROME, which adds armies and city defenses to the Pandemic world. It looks INCREDIBLE, and we can’t wait to play it!

7/
I have heard some people don’t like the idea of playing Pandemic during a, you know, Pandemic. We felt exactly the opposite. It felt lovely playing characters trying to fight these viruses, and when you win, you actually want to cheer.

HIGHEST recommendation. @Zmangames_

7/
Next is CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE: HOUSE OF DANGER.

Raise your hand if you were hooked on these books as a kid! I thought this was like an escape room thing, but it looks like a fully realized game with board, tokens and cards. Earn different endings!

8/
Next they sent Carcassone and I am a little embarrassed that I have never played this or even seen it played despite the fact that it has sold over TWELVE MILLION COPIES.

It does look fun and appealing...gotta try this! Any tips?

9/
Now, @Zmangames_ has some of the biggest franchises in gaming and a sterling reputation. But they are always doing new stuff, too. And this one looks MAGNIFICENT. It’s CRYO, where your space ship crashes and you have to salvage what you can to survive. WOW! Anyone played it?

10/
Thank you, @Zmangames_ for these incredibly beautiful and compelling games. WOW!

11/
Now, again, I am doing this because I stumbled into this hobby and it’s made a real difference for my emotional health during quarantine. I think it could help a lot of you, too. Games are so varied now, with such beautiful writing and design. Maybe try one!

12/
These two look like easy-to-play games you could stick in your purse...I love those. LOVE LETTERS is a game of trying to get messages to the Princess, with a romantic design, and INFINTIY GAUNTLET actually looks similar in concept, but with Thanos!
Love fast games!

13/
And finally from @Zmangames_, a card game of building a dinosaur zoo. I have to say, this looks REALLY charming. This is gonna be a Cup-O-Tea game for sure!

14/
The last publisher is @9thLevelGames who sent a Bunch of stuff, in such a remarkable range...almost no two games look at all the same, but the emphasis is definitely on fun.

They seem to also emphasize games that can be played by all ages.

Great stuff, let’s look!

15/
First up is SCHRODINGER’S CATS, where you play different cat physicists, in competition with each other, using ‘shaky, catnip-induced ethics.’
This game sounds hilarious and packs a LOT into a little box. The art just begs you to play it!

16/
Here’s what looks like a companion game, PAVLOV’S DOGS, where you play famous dog psychiatrists, like Sigmund Fetch, and man, I just want to open this up and play it. It looks adorable and funny. Great stuff, @9thLevelGames!

17/
Next we have MEEPLE PARTY, which is a full-size board game, again, with a hilarious party premise, you play a MEEPLE who is a Jerk, or a Flirt, or some other personality, and look for the perfect social media opportunity. It looks hilarious! Plus, I just love MEEPLES.

18/
Okay, now these last three games all use the POLYMORPH system, in which each player only uses ONE DIE for everything in the game! That sounds amazing!

MAZES the fun, throwback full RPG using this system!

It's available now, getting a hardcover upgrade shortly!

19/
Using that same 1-die system are these fun, simple, tiny RPGs, from @9thLevelGames.

THE EXCELLENTS, where you play a Princess in a cartoon world, and BUSINESS WIZARDS, where you play a wizard using magic for capitalism...:)

Fun, complete color rpgs in your pocket!

20/
I really like the take on RPGs in these @9thLevelGames. They are fun and welcoming, with grate graphics and a level of ease that reminds me of early RPGs. A parent could have a great time with their kids with these, too.

Nifty!

21/
That’s it, whew! Seriously, if you are feeling a bit cramped in, choose an rpg or board game to exercise your creativity, imagination, maybe even your sense of fear, wonder or conquest.

Check the tag #TabletopGails for lots of recommendations!

That’s it. Get playin’!

22/
Thank you to

@TabletopLoot at tabletoploot.com (GORGEOUS DICE!)

@Zmangames_ at zmangames.com

And

@9thLevelGames at 9thlevel.com

Bye, all!

I have a Roger Corman story. It’s fun, but weird, as I am gathering most Roger Corman stories tend to be.

I was a fan of his movies and his legend and legacy.

At the very beginning of my comics career, his office contacted me.

1/
I was very new to writing professionally. I didn’t become a writer to make films, comics were not a stepping stone. And I had mostly been drafted, so my sense of value in myself as a writer was a bit shaky and tinged with a lot of, ‘how did I get here? What’s happening?’

2/
The idea that a legendary movie guy would contact me for anything made no sense. I still had my hair salon. I hadn’t even written very many comics, and I was pretty sure it was all going to go away very quickly.

Then I get this call.

I remind everyone of this each year, apologies for repeating myself.

This Saturday, May 4th, is @Freecomicbook Day! Please go and enjoy and have a wonderful time. Some great shops have sales, cosplay, events, guests, even treats planned for you, PLUS FREE COMICS!

1/
Howerer, this is just a gentle reminder that, unlike what many think, the stores DO have to pay for the comics they give away for free. They pay for them in bundles. This year there are dozens of individual comics being given away...imagine how much that might cost!

2/
But that's not all. They also pay (often outrageous) shipping on all those books.

Stores often pay for extra employees, decorations, advertising, cosplayers, guests, and lots more. It is EXPENSIVE.

Here is my central core thought while writing Deadpool.

It is no secret that I don't like endlessly 'zany' Deadpool. He was described as 'serial killer Daffy Duck' to me early on, that's the version I don't care for.

1/
I also don't care for endlessly bleak, 'nothing matters,' kill everyone Deadpool.

I think that could be a thousand other characters, and it's far from the magic potion that makes Deadpool fun.

2/
So the Deadpool is a subverted version of both of those.

He is a goddamn loudmouth, whose humor comes from tragedy.

But he's so endlessly high energy that it saves him from being insufferable and dreary.

And ALSO so internally sad and broken that he's not a constant punchline.

Today is @Dwayne_McDuffie's birthday. He would have been 62 today, if he hadn't passed unexpectedly one day after his 49th birthday.

To me, and most everyone who knew him, Dwayne was a light we all orbited in someway. There are many great creators.

Dwayne was a giant.

1/ Image
I've told this story before but it can't be overstated. I absolutely would not have this career I love, and this life I love, without Dwayne.

I am far from the only person he lifted up and put on the stairway out. Out of poverty, out of an unfulfilling career.

2/
You may have heard some or all of this before. But to this day, when I think of Dwayne McDuffie, I am a bundle of terrible and wonderful emotions. I smile at the fact that I got to meet him at all, and then I cry because his loss is so vast, it still seems insurmountable.

I don’t dislike the Star Wars sequels at all, I find them pretty antertaining and they did a lot right.

My objection is the things they set up and completely squandered.

Chief among them is Finn, whose story could have been an absolute banger.

1/
Finn leading a Stormtrooper rebellion, that’s massive, a sea change and a real evolution of ideas that could have expanded the lore tremendously.

But also Poe, his story isn’t even a real story, there’s no arc.

2/
And the lead characters of the first three films all die with a desperate whimper.

It’s sad because all the elements were there. The set-up is magnificent.

But only the Rey/Kylo story really lands, and it lands by cheating a lot.

One time at SDCC, Dan DiDio invited me to lunch at a beautiful seafood restaurant on the bay. He had been given a list of properties that WB owned, many of which DC would have had the ability to adapt to comics.

It was STUNNING. I had no idea, I don't think Dan knew, either.

1/
He said that this list could do something for DC that hadn't really been the case in a long time, it could open up a ton of genres with already-popular IP.

Many were very dormant concepts, but many still had active fanbases, and some were huge.

And we could use them.

2/
So there were a lot of things people know, like MORTAL KOMBAT and the various Bugs Bunny-type things, but the list just went on and on and on, things like the Three Stooges and tons of toy lines and action movie franchises. It was an incredible list.
