Tom’s Top 21 70s-Era West African Albums

21) “This Is Marijata” — Marijata (1976) open.spotify.com/album/5NgqwPu0…
20) “Keleya” — Moussa Doumbia (1977) open.spotify.com/album/3i4hwBt0…
19) “Freedom” — Christiana Essien (1977) discogs.com/artist/837560-… (As her early stuff is impossible to locate online, you’ll need to check out what is available)
18) “Volume 1” — Amadou & Mariam (1988) open.spotify.com/album/1ZsjLN1r… (Admittedly this falls outside of the 70s timeframe but Amadou & Mariam need to be included in any best-of list of West African music)
17) “Akofa Akoussah” — Akofa Akoussah (1976) open.spotify.com/album/76MYmID5…
16) “Mouhamada Bamba” — Orchestra Baobab (1980) open.spotify.com/album/4h4yBxb4…
15) “The River” — Ali Farka Toure (1990) open.spotify.com/album/78Pv299m… (Also outside the 70s timeframe, but Ali Farka Toure likewise needs to be included in any list of the best West African music ... some of his other albums are more interesting than this one)
14) “Horizon Unlimited” — Lijadu Sisters (1979) open.spotify.com/album/6NfAHT2x…
13) “The Chisa Years, 1965-1975” — Hugh Masekela (2014) open.spotify.com/album/3GWyP7C2… (Masekela is admittedly from South Africa but I’m including him anyway because more people need to listen to his music)
12) “En Super Forme” — Super Boiro Band (1976) open.spotify.com/album/5zIHmEwf…
11) “Shango” — Peter King (1974) open.spotify.com/album/5WC8uGHI…
10) “Fela with Ginger Baker Live” — Fela Ransome-Kuti with Ginger Baker (1971) open.spotify.com/album/4muZmxBE…
9) “A Night at Club Baobab, Senegalese Dance Music of the 1970s” — Orchestra Baobab (2006) open.spotify.com/album/0ZS9LdgK…
8) “Life Stories” — Ebo Taylor (1977) open.spotify.com/album/5vf9w7uD…
7) “Juju Music” — King Sunny Ade (1982) open.spotify.com/album/4BsMW0J2…
6) “My Love and Music” — Ebo Taylor (1975) open.spotify.com/album/2gdtgeYm…
5) “Africa” — Amanaz (1975) open.spotify.com/album/1oX2uFCr… (One of the best albums from anywhere in the world)
4) “NEPA (Never Expect Power Always)” — Tony Allen (1984) open.spotify.com/album/17v6kHil… (This album is from the 80s but Allen was active from the 60s through last year; he didn't release solo albums until later, but he's a legend of 70s Afrobeat)
3) “What” — William Onyeabor (2014 ... but his music was actually recorded in the 70s) open.spotify.com/album/5K9nDeTE… (If you're going to go down a rabbit hole w/ anyone on this list, make it Fela & Onyeabor ... his music is from the 70s but the albums are hard to find)
2) “Opposite People” — Fela Kuti (1977) open.spotify.com/album/6biR88DI… (The top 20 spots could have all been filled w/ Fela, but I had to choose …)
1) “Unnecessary Begging” — Fela Kuti (1976) open.spotify.com/album/1xlK9lEG…

One way you can tell the D.C. statehood push has nothing to do w/ “taxation w/o representation”: These activists oppose proposals to “retrocede” D.C. into Maryland (besides federal buildings); they do so b/c they explicitly want more power for Democrats
.@RashidaTlaib: Republicans “and their dark money backers” at @Heritage are “shameful” in opposing D.C. statehood, preserving an "authoritarian system implemented by a bunch of elites who thought it was okay to enslave people for their selfish monetary gains 100s of years ago"
@RashidaTlaib @Heritage .@MayorBowser says she opposes D.C. residents gaining the ability to vote by merging with Maryland: “We’re not residents of Maryland”

.@RandPaul evicerates Dr. Fauci over the “theater” of requiring Americans already immune from Covid to continue wearing masks.

Fauci’s ultimate rebuttal: “I totally disagree with you”
@RandPaul Flashback: Fauci admits he wears masks as “a symbol for people to see that’s the kind of thing they should be doing”

edition.cnn.com/2020/05/27/pol…
@RandPaul Fauci tells CNN: "I’m afraid, if people hear what [@RandPaul] says, and believe it, and you have an elderly person who has been infected, and they decide, ‘Well, Rand Paul says let’s not wear a mask,’ they won’t. They could get reinfected again and get into trouble."

The killings in Atlanta are horrifying. The murderer is obviously a very disturbed and very evil person.

Unfortunately the media's inability to think beyond race minimizes the actual tragedy. There were people, not mere members of some larger color group. 1/
If someone in your family were killed in cold blood, would you want the headline to read, "Ax-Wielding Lunatic Murders White Guy" or "Gunman Murders Asian Woman"? 2/
We're all unique individuals living our own independent lives, with our own values and our own achievements; we deserve being recognized for who we are. 3/

Well it's been two weeks and, as usual, the doomsdayers' forecasts have fallen completely flat. Contrary to the predictions of Fauci/@AOC and virtually everyone in the major media, Texas has seen its Covid caseload drop since losing its mask mandate/capacity restrictions.
@AOC What AOC said would happen vs. what happened
@AOC On the same day Texas dropped its mask mandate, Mississippi did as well. Did cases immediately begin skyrocketing?

They did not.
